When I decided that I wanted to do band in middle school (decision made in grade 5) I had to fight with my parents to get the to let me. I was one of those kids who loved to start projects and not finish. Well, they finally agreed to let me try under the stipulation that I COULD NOT play drums. Skip a few months ahead to instrument try out day. Our Director had everyone write down on an index card the 3 instruments they were most interested in, in order. 1. Tpt, 2. Oboe, 3, Euphonium She then took students 1 at a time into her office and had us blow into the mouthpieces and if it was decent, into the horn. (There was someone else in the next office over doing woodwinds as well) I first tried Euph and had a decent sound on it, then trumpet, again good sound. She looked at me with a smile and said that both were really good and that if I wanted, I could try the oboe or I could choose one. I told her, I'll take the trumpet, it's smaller. (at the time I was probably 4'3" 70 lbs; now 5'10" 135 lbs.) Best decision I ever made. Then again, i think it chose me more so than my choosing it. |

| Re: How did you get to choose trumpet as your main instrument? I started on violin in 3rd grade. We were not allowed to play in band until 4th. When 4th grade came the band director went around to all the classrooms and demonstrated all the instruments. The trumpet was shiny and loud. That sold me, been happy ever since. |

| Re: How did you get to choose trumpet as your main instrument? Actually, trumpet is not my main instrument. I'm really a woodwind player, playing tenor sax in a couple community bands. I always wanted to play trumpet though because I've worshipped Herb Alpert since high school. When I was 15 i went out and bought a trumpet at a pawn shop and tried to learn how to play. Both my clarinet teacher at the time and my band leader strongly discouraged me from learning (imagine that!) insisting it would ruin my embouchure. Well, I listened to them and the trumpert went into the closet where it sat for over 20 years. Just a few months ago, for some unknown reason, I started itching to play again and decided to start lessons at the local music store. I take lessons once a week and I am absolutely LOVING IT! Just being able to play Spanish Flea and hit most of the high notes most of the time has made it so worthwhile. It's really exciting to know that I can do this. Going from a woodwind to brass is not easy at all but so rewarding. I don't think a teacher should ever discourage a student from wanting to try something new. I never should have listened to them! |

| Re: How did you get to choose trumpet as your main instrument? Brother used to play it and I looked up to him, so I decided to play it as well. He stopped to pursue sports but I kept on playing. |

| Re: How did you get to choose trumpet as your main instrument? When I was two, I found a Glenn Miller cassette tape on a sidewalk. The trumpets amazed me! At 6, my parents had me take violin lessons. After 5 lessons, I decided that I was not a string player. I insisted on playing trumpet. Still have a few pictures of one of my first lessons. The horn was almost bigger than me! |

| Re: How did you get to choose trumpet as your main instrument? My first time hearing the trumpet was a recording of Louis Armstrong. Ever since that time when I was 6, the trumpet was what I wanted to do. He was probably my first musical idol. Of course, being Asian, my parents told me do piano, so I did that starting at 7. Then in fourth grade, we got the option of doing band. I jumped at the opportunity of finally playing a trumpet. At first the teacher wanted me to do trombone (no one tried to play it), but I was locked onto the trumpet. Now, I'm a sophomore in High School and I still have that first trumpet. I'm participating in Jazz Band, Symphony Orchestra, Concert Band, and the Musical Pit Band. It's awesome. |

When I was in 4th grade I remember sitting on the curb watching the Memorial day parade make it's way across the bridge. There's this fancy ceremony where they throw a wreath into the river in memory of the veterans, and the High School Band played music for that. The trumpet section happened to have stopped in front of me, and I'm like "mommy mommy, look at those!," and I started making all sorts of noise about the shiny loud things. I think one of them of the players almost fell over laughing |
