I really understand that some people prefer to be vegetarian for its health benefits (although I knew one that smoked -- that always cracked me up). But eating something dead is part of life. A natural thing. Much of nature eats meat. I personally respect vegetarians -- but that life is not for me. I cook my steaks well done -- I loved "blackened" meat covered in black pepper and cajun spices. Oh my .... I'm hungry. Jim

When a cow is shot or a chicken has its head cut off that's different from when a plant dies. Have you ever seen a fish flopping around the inside of a boat in very clear desperation and terror? Even if you pull a leg or wing off a bug...that very different from picking an apple or digging up potatoes. We're not really part of the food chain anymore. We don't do our own killing, we have it done for us. We don't rely on meat to sustain ourselves like other parts of nature do. Interestingly enough, there is a slightly radical branch of vegetarianism called "fruitarians". They only eat fruits and vegetables from plants that can be harvested without killing the plant. So, apples would qualify but carrots would not. I guess they're being extra careful.

![]() | ah-hemm.... back to the original question, I think the guy just wanted a good steak recipe. here's a real simple way to cook a good piece of meat. You can cook a decent steak on the grill, with lots of seasonings and steak sauce, etc, but, if your gonna do it up right, like a nice rib-eye, here's a gooood way: 1 ribeye steak (1 to 1 1/2 inches thick) canola oil kosher salt, pepper you need a cast-iron skillet Place 10 to 12-inch cast iron skillet in oven and heat oven to 500 degrees. When oven reaches temperature, remove pan and place on range over high heat. Coat steak lightly with oil and season both sides with a generous pinch of salt. Grind on black pepper to taste. Immediately place steak in the middle of hot, dry pan. Cook 30 seconds without moving. Turn with tongs and cook another 30 seconds, then put the pan straight into the oven for 2 minutes. Flip steak and cook for another 2 minutes. (This time is for medium rare steaks. If you prefer medium, add a minute to both of the oven turns.) real men..errr...people eat their steaks just like this, a little salt a little pepper, nothing else. mmmmm....yummy. |

![]() | Nice one PINT! I think I might try that. I'm more into the grill but that sounds like a good winter option. Quote:

![]() | mmmm........ steak good!!! Coat steak with olive oil lightly!!! Salt and pepper. Sear on a hot grill 2 min each side. Take away from high heat, put it on med heat cook to desired doneness. Remember you need to have two different heat zones on your grill. Nothing tastes better than a good naturally cooked steak. |
