| Forte User | Re: Ice Storm, February 2007 hmmm...memory is trying to serve me here... that much ice usually results in power loss due to downed lines. If you have a gas generator, you should be ok with the hair dryer trick. Otherwise, warming some water (presuming you have a gas stove or gas grill with a side burner) will loosen the ice around the car door. It doesn;t have to be boiling, just warmer than freezing to melt it. Then, you canstart the car and let it run with the de-froster going at full bore. Should take about 15-20 minutes or so until the ice is melted unrerneath, and then the fun part...the ice should come off, as it's melted on the bottom, in sheets. I use the corner of my scraper to make grids. On second thought...after looking closer at those photos Toots put up...a torch around the doors. Then just let the sucker run for about an hour or so.

![]() | Re: Ice Storm, February 2007 That's my thinking: All you need to do is get one door open, make sure the intake and exhaust are clear, start the car, and let the heat melt the ice. While it is melting, we drink Manny's scotch. Or..........drink the scotch first; let nature take its course, then pee open the door.. |

| Fortissimo User | Re: Ice Storm, February 2007 I recommend that you thump the tires with a hammer to break the ice off and allow the wheels to rotate. Then get a tow truck to haul it to some place indoors to thaw out: a car wash might work well. The lowest cost option is to wait for spring. :) I would NOT try to run the engine with the vehicle in that condition; no air flow through the rad (grill is iced over) will result in a destroyed (or at least severely overheated) engine. That's why I wouldn't use the remote start (if it had one). (Ever forgotten to take the sheet of cardboard from in front of the rad when the temperature rises above -30 or so?....) |
