I think that a lot of it has to do with chemistry within the band as well as them chemistry between the band and the audience, and to that end, the Stones have always seemed to have more than their fair share. True, the music may be basic, and when you really stop to LOOK at them and listen to what's actually coming out of the PA, it may not be that great, but they always seem to be able to get the crowd going, no matter what.

As for age, my band has a great asset in the person of Doug Lewis. Doug was in the "biz" back in the late 60s with a group called "The Peppermint Rainbow" who had big hit with "Will You Be Staying After Sunday". Even though they were kind of a one-hit wonder, Doug continued to gig full time for a living until the mid 80s, so suffice it to say, the guy has a gig or two under his belt. Doug is 57 and is probably the most talented performer in the group. He has a versatile voice and he can virtually mimic:
Al Green
Joe Cocker
Bob Seger
Eric Clapton
Kenny Rogers
Willie Nelson (I've actually heard people exclaim from the floor "he's GOT to be lip synching!" - it's THAT close)
Otis Redding
(Others)

He's also an astounding guitar player and even though he has some wrinkles, his hair is gray and he's thinning on top, he never fails to get a great crowd response, and having him in the band is a very positive thing...

But he also sings way better than Mick Jagger and he plays guitar way better than Keith Richards. The biggest difference between them (other than the fact that Doug is far more talented) is that the Stone's ship set sail and the Peppermint Rainbow never got out of port.

Here's a couple of pics of Doug.

Then: (Doug is in the middle)

Question: Why do the Rolling Stones keep Keith Richards in the band?

Answer: Because next to him the other fellows look young and healthy!

ba-dum-dum!

I am going to come out in defense of the Stones, sort of. Charlie Watts is an accomplished jazz drummer and has quite a good tentet going.

Some info here:

Rgale has a spectacular aura about
I like the Stones, but I'm getting older, too. So I appreciate some of the new lyrics I hear they're using, like....

"Let's take a nap together"
"She's so cold! Oh, hell, she's dead!"
"I can't get no more collagen implants."

I liked what the Stones did. It was fun and all. My kids, all under the age of 11 thought it was bizarre that Mom and Dad liked that kind of music.

I have to admit that I never really dug them the way I got into The Who, Led Zepplin, Aerosmith and the Beatles.

In my younger days, I played bass and sang lead in rock band.

And now the real reason the Stones did the show: They made more money playing one halftime show than any of us are going to make playing this year.

I agree that the Stones were rather pathetic at halftime. But I'm not sure they took the gig completely for the money. They knew they were going to be seen by over 140 million people around the world and just that much exposure will increase their record sales by a minimum of 300% for the next year or so. This is probably their last tour, so more power to them.

And remember, if we're not fronting a band, then we're in it. And when you're in it, you try and make who's out front sound their best (or better than they are). That's the name of the gig, and it shouldn't matter how old the headliner is if he/she's paying you. If they've got the money, they can look as ridiculous as they want. I'm going to the bank the next day.

I've played jazz toons with only 1 chord in them, I even played jazz with no chords. It ain't about how many chords or notes you play or even the technical ability, it's about emotion. Don't look down on something just because you don't like it. I've had more fun playing "2 chord rock and roll" than I have playing Mozart or Bach, it doesn't mean it's any better.

Having said that, I thought the Stones weren't on top form either
