![]() | Funny little thing at my school -- they call me the pencil teacher. Not because I'm skinny, but because I give them out all the time. I don't dare give out candy because it is sure to make some student sick, and I hate stickers. A few years ago I had a student ask to borrow a pencil. I told him, "you can keep it, you did very well in class today!" Another student immediately asked if he could have a pencil if he did well the next day -- of course I said yes. I give out an average of 8-10 pencils per day. Last school year I went through about 2000. Those pencils cost me about $400, but they are worth their weight in gold. It is funny to hear a teacher tell me that a student would not allow another student to borrow a certain pencil because it was the one Mr. Hamilton gave him. He pulled out his book sack and gave him a different pencil. I've been given hugs, thank you notes, phone calls from parents, and even a gift certificate to the teacher store after I gave out pencils. Our positive motivation for our students, in hugs, pats on the back, pencils, and yes-- even just a smile, are worth a lot to our students. I commend you for what you obviously are doing with your students. I tell people that teachers don't get paid in cash very well, but the moments like the ones you wrote about make us millionaires!
