Re: Jobs

Tata you'd be welcome to busk with me - I'd probably play backing for you, the star. But you know, I've had a fascination with busking ever since I first saw it being done. I'm just weird that way.

There's an utter lack of jobs here where I am too. And my playing will just not be "there" for a long time, I need to get out with my sketch pad and get some caricaturing practice in, I've done a few and earned a few bucks, but I really need to get out there, tourist season starting in about a month and between Prescott, Sedona, and Jerome, there may be some decent bucks to be made.

Patric, have you considered doing odd jobs? Painting, yardwork, etc etc etc? Put your ad on your local Craig's List, get a cell phone so ppl can reach you, and just make yourself available. You may be weeding a yard one day and babysitting the next, but hardly anyone pays less than $10 an hour these days.

Re: Jobs

No such thing as "labor ready" here.

Patric, doing odd jobs for friends of your parents etc is a good way to start out, once you do good work for one or two of them, then word spreads by mouth, and you build up a network.

OK so you want to earn $600 a month, that's $20 a day. Hell, you might be able to do that busking, honestly. Or, odd jobs, etc., anything, just figure out what you need to do and try.

As for me that's what I'd like to earn too, the weather's finally warming up so I'm out of the 4 months a year here where I'm just "wintered in" and nothing can be done. I just don't think I'm going to be good enough to busk any time soon, and in my own case - no jobs right around here and the area with jobs 20+ miles away, I feel I'll have to "make" a job by getting out there and sketching folks. I don't care if I give sketches away for free, because it's training, and it helps spread the word that I do 'em and can result in paying work later.

Patric, the US is heading into a Depression like the one in the 1930s you may have read about in school. You think times are hard now, just wait - they're going to get BAD. You will have to be very creative, inventive, and hard-working to get work. From my experiences being VERY poor in the 1970s, which were close to a Depression, there were two things that could be counted on - something artistic that made people feel like they were getting a "treat", and being able to hunt, forage, and grow stuff. Now it's going back to as bad as it was in the 1970s, then it will be as bad as in the 1930s, then it will be worse. The game will be to make money, keep from spending it if possible*, and be very flexible. And keep up your music studies! Because in 10 years even having electricity may not be guranteed, and with the TVs and radios off, people will crave music.

*Most jobs around here require a car, so you're working and making maybe $600-$800 a month, and spending $600-$800 a month to support the car. Don't get caught in a trap like that.

Re: Jobs

Get a gig playing for the national guard or army. Army for full-time, guard for part-time.

Offer to play for free for a wedding or event. Get your name and your sound out there. You have to be willing to give a little to get a little.

Wait tables. Good way to make some change and meet people.

Be willing to talk to anybody and everybody.

If you can't find full-time work, find part-time work. If you can't find that, do odd jobs. If you can't find that, busk.

Get a bike, save cash. :)

Jarrett is an unknown quantity at this point
Re: Jobs

Army will start you off just under 30,000 a year, plus free medical, dental and housing. You could do worse. National guard will pay a couple hundred a month and if your in college I believe you can get quite a bit more for living expenses. Easily 600 a month I believe.
And, you'd only have to work 2 days a month and 2 weeks a year.
Just a thought.

Re: Jobs

Ha ha ha! That is too funny. Busking works, and I worked as a Canadian military musician for 8 years before transferring to the Clerk trade in the Air Force. It is the best paid job a musician can get! Sure, you have to do basic training, but it's worth it! I've travelled all over the place to play. France, Holland, the US and parts of Canada. It's a great way to earn $ to play! With trumpet, it is so hard to make a living, unless you're Winton Marsalis! That is also another reason I switched to euphonium. But I do get the call to play trumpet/cornet, and the odd Last Post job every once in awhile.

With my squadron, I am playing Last Post for a Memorial in a few weeks. You never lose it and being in the Forces, they will use people who know how to play their horns! I hope that helps you out a bit!
