I would think that she doesn't have that much of a range of job choices to choose from.

In Canada there was a news story a few years ago about Mounted Police who cannot wear the full Mountie outfit because their religion says that they must wear a turban. Does that mean that they shouldn't be a Mountie?

Re: Manny in the news

Dear Brek,

Let me put in a context that, I hope, will make some sense because you, like a gentleman, made some important points.

This is one incident out of many that has begun to chap the hides of many Minnesotans and other Americans.

We had an incident recently where Muslim cab dirivers refused fares because they were carrying unopened packages of alcohol. Unopened. There was another incident which I'm sure you've ben reading about where a bunch of Muslim clerics decided to act very strangely in the waiting area of an airport gate and then proceded to act in even startnger and worisome ways once in the plane. It was a provocative act, to be sure, but now they are behaving as predicted and are going forward with a lawsuit abgainst Northwest Airlines. There have been other acts of forcing institutions to bend to their will by having additional prayer breaks added to businesses during everyone else's work time. There have been requests for colleges to provide "Muslim Only" bathrooms, so that they could wash during the day intermittently and not have the dirt of infidels contaminate "their" was areas. Their have been acts of shoutdowns and bullying of Jews on college campuses. I'm at work, otherwise, I'd provide you all the links to each story I've listed. I'll do so later unless someone beats me to it.

This latest display of taking a concept to it's Nth degree is just one of many instances and guess what? People have had enough. It's not about the bacon or ham or pepperoni pizza anymore. It's about an appalling lack of common sense and stretching a point because one can. People aren't going to stand for it anymore, they're just not.

Many workers wear gloves so as not to contaminate nor be contaminated. Why can't she do that? This is utter nonsense, in my opinion, and not a way to ingratiate oneself to an adoptive culture.

As for not spelling out the name of my favorite deity: it has nothing to do with not offending anyone who doesn't believe. It has to do with a Jewish law that I follow in deference to my wife and children even though I'm a Catholic. It has to do with not writing G-d's name on something that can be printed out and then possibly discarded. In effect, not allowing G-d's name to be disposed of with trash.

ML

1. There are plenty of jobs available to people in MN that want to work.
2. If a choice I make prevents me from wearing a uniform that everyone else has to wear, then yes, it should prevent me from being a Mountie.

I don't like wearing my hat, but I wear it anyway. Why? Because it is part of my uniform. Maybe the entire trumpet section of the Minnesota Orchestra hates wearing a tux. Does that mean they should be allowed to perform in "alternative" garb?

It isn't a choice to them to not wear a turban. It is a mandatory part of their religion.

Manny, thanks for clearing that up. I was going to send you a PM, but it came up in my reply. I had no idea that Judaism had a rule about that.

It is a choice. They choose to follow what religion they want.

What, are they living in an oppressive middle-eastern nation? I don't think so.
They are free to practice their religion and free to pursue a career in law enforcement.

If they can't obey the rules of both then they are free to choose one over the other, aren't they?

Any other way of looking at it is just plain obtuse.

But it's not mandatory for them to become a Mountie.

Re: Manny in the news

They shouldn't be limited in their career choices because of their religion. A job should accept peoples differences, especially one as minor as that. Luckily the rule-makers allow Turbans to be worn while on duty, and possibly Hijabs.
Not handling pork, or wearing a turban are such a minute part of each persons job, why not just overlook it.

I wouldn't call myself a liberal. I don't really label my views because they are different for every topic.
