![]() | Re: OK now which is really cooler, trumpet or sax? I know there are some really good pocket instruments.... I think a good pocket trumpet would be cool to have. NO CCJ (cheep chinese junk) thanx.... I've been looking at this another way too .... if you play trumpet you can play: Trumpet - cool Cornet - cool Trombone - cool French Horn (at least theoretically) - cool Flugelhorn - cool Some piece of pipe you pick up and honk on to impress your friends - cool If you can play sax you can play: Sax - cool but no classical Clarinet - drool. I do, besides it reminds me too much of a duck So there's really only one other major instrument you can play, it's not that cool really, to my mind, and I guess there's not much classical written for the sax when I think about it, which kind of sux because I actually like classical, a lot. Now, maybe the public wouldn't know what a flugelhorn was when they saw it, they'd say something like, "What the hell is that thing, a baby tuba? A fat trumpet?" but they are cool. Played WELL, uber-cool. There's a clip on YouTube of a Cuban guy playing one that's amazing. And a guy doing Girl From Ipanema that's very good too. Maybe the thing for me to do is I'm interested in the reed business is get a Xaphoon and mess around with that.

Angels do not play trombone. Nor saxes, nor banjos, nor accordians. Nope.

![]() | Re: OK now which is really cooler, trumpet or sax? One of the music-for-Xaphoon sites says just learn to play it by ear - sounds pretty user-friendly. It doesn't come with a case you can leave open for people to pitch money into, though - you'd have to think of something for that. Another consideration: if you move to the city and get a room, you could probably practice the Xaphoon at home. Good luck doing that with a trumpet. (Trumpet played very softly doesn't sound so great. Or at least, not much like a trumpet.) |

![]() | Re: OK now which is really cooler, trumpet or sax? Hm, yeah ..... Except I'm learning notes (to read 'em) on the trumpet, and I can practice trumpet around here, no one seems to mind. Not really seriously looking at getting a xaphoon, just thinking, it's about the cheapest way to get into something that uses reeds, at about $50. I'm already learning that reeds + lots of keys can = "hanger queen" "Hanger queen" means an airplane that's in the hanger all the time being repaired!

![]() ![]() | Re: OK now which is really cooler, trumpet or sax? Sure there are more things to go wrong when more keys are added. But most woodwinds are fairly simple to repair, and many issues can be handled by anyone with a little time and effort. No real need for specialized tools to handle repairs that occur most often, like pad replacement, corks ... .

You can Tune Up the Chain Saw!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! These are the Jokes.....I don't write 'em, I just tell 'em!!!! |

![]() | Re: OK now which is really cooler, trumpet or sax? Yeah, there was actually a wooden Yamaha for sale around here for $100 or trade ..... gal wanted craft materials which, depending on what she wants, I could have. Should have jumped on it. Just because I'd rather have that even if just lying around, than a bunch of beads, old leather stuff for cutting up, etc lying around here.
