If I read the post and your subsequent answer, isn't the point of it and what you wrote the same thing? I got from it the same as you: that we have lost common sense and a sense of responsibility in child rearing. It quickly became convoluted as a religious argument whereas I thought there was much more being mentioned than that.

What am I missing?

Manny,

At first read it might seem as someone is trying to say “hey we have a problem with kids etc...” but really the forward is about using religious propaganda to attack the separation of church and state and the role of government in modern society. The forward contains factual errors and uses a kind of fear based manipulation, or fear based thinking that I hold in contempt.

I tend to reject things that insult my ability to reason and think for myself, and hope that others would do the same.

[edit for spelling]

Way Way less.
No, we had parents then that did their jobs and raised their kids instead of dumping that job on to the school and then complaining about the way it was done.

You act like schools are the catalyst here for this change, it is the citizens( read parents) who drive the whole system.
When you have kids in their teens, send me a PM and we can talk but for now I will blame every body else.

I am not in favor of the government telling me what to do at all. Not in the schools or any where. I do believe that kids need structure and the more we let up in school or TV or whatever the more it will affect our kids for the worst. Too much information for a thirteen year old is not good.

When the kids had to dress for school and they watched Leave it to Beaver or Andy Griffith, I believe they were better off. The internet has a lot of good things and a lot of bad. It is almost impossible to block all the bad stuff. If I were to block everything I could, my son could still go to Johnny's house and see it.

With all the dummying down and trying to make everybody feel good and make every body equal we have desensitized our children and that is the problem.

If you are going to talk down to me I could easily say why don't you go work in public schools for a while and have to deal with parents that act like you are acting then come talk to me.

It goes both ways..............

I was in the schools for a long time. When were you a parent?

You are now trying to use your time in schools when you were a kid as bases of discussion on how schools are run.

That is laughable.

I wasn't talking down, maybe it reads that way.

I remember listening to people at work talking about their kids and thinking,"that will never happen to me. I'm too close with my kids" Now I'm in the middle of exactly what they were talking about.

I love my kids and that is a good thing. Here are some bad things. FROM EXPERIENCE looking back.

My kids were good, therefore they could choose how to dress in school.

I was very liberal about what they could watch on TV

I was very liberal about what they could see on the computer.

I was very open about sex and answered all questions.

I didn't make them go to church.

If they had a bad teacher I told them the teacher is probably bad but you need to work through your problems.

This is what comes to mind quickly.
If you were to go back to the first post you would see a pattern of structure that is not there anymore and is sadly lacking.

My views have changed with experience as a parent.

As a Jewish parent I don't want Christmas pushed at me and as a Christian parent I don't want Hanukah pushed at me. So to make every one happy we take every thing away from the public venues and structure goes with it.

I don't want my kid getting condoms in school and I don't want my daughter getting an abortion without me knowing, or at all.

We as a society have taken away the authority the school had and replaced it with all the wrong stuff.

Perhaps our views are not so different.

I read the post with the metaphors that were being presented in mind, Jason, not literally. Give me a bit more credit, please.

Dear God:

Why didn't you save the school children at ?. .

Dear Concerned Student:

I am not allowed in schools.

Sincerely,

God

THAT is propaganda for sure. Forget what the rest says. Could you honestly look a child in the face after having asked this question and give him/her THIS answer? It is awful to paint "God" in such a light. This line right here is what the entire "FWD" (which many of us have seen before) is really about. It has been used often by those who subscribe to the idea that a Christian God belongs in school and should be forced down the throat of every child regardlless of what their parents want. It seems as though all of us have come to basically the same conclusion through discussion, but you cannot deny what the original post was saying metaphorically or literally....and it wasn't saying, in my opinion, what most of us have concluded is the "ideal" answer.
