trumpet blower88,

What kind of literature does a high school orchestra play? I didn’t get involved with orchestras until I was out of school, so I have very limited exposure to what you’ll be playing. Years ago I was hired to play the Vivaldi Gloria at Red Mountain High School (I knew the choir director and her trumpet players weren't up to piccolo parts), and when I was at Interlochen (not in the orchestra, though) they were playing Firebird and some other really challenging literature (not your typical HS orchestra!).

I know that literature is very different between the Mesa Symphony and the Symphony of the West Valley and works to the strengths of the specific ensemble. I’m guessing that most high school orchestras won’t be programming Mahler or Stravinsky, but I’m just curious to know what’s on your programs for this season (both orchestras if you know).

Have a great season!

When I was in my high school orchestra we played things like Bizet's Farandole, Carmen, Copland Outdoor Overture, Romeo and Juliet, and things of that ilk.

BigBadWolf,

So a lot of Pops stuff. I’d consider that 2-rehearsal literature in the groups that I play with. How many rehearsals did it take for a HS orchestra to put these things together?

I remember a Pops concert years ago where we did An Outdoor Overture. The guy that was covering the principal book (actually we were ALL subs for this concert), was the 2nd trumpet in the Phoenix Symphony. It was the first time that I had heard the piece and he just made it sound effortless. When he got to that High C in the solo part it was like he delivered that note on a purple velvet pillow! Man, talk about beautiful!

Honestly, I don't remember. However long a typical concert cycle is in high school, 1 month, 2 months, I don't know.

Well, last year for the Carnegie Performance our line up was this:
1. Festive Overture Op. 96 by Shostakovich
2. Nimrod from "Enigma Variations" by Elgar
3. Hungarian Dance No. 5 by Brahms
4. Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 67 Finale (Allegro) by Beethoven

We played a pops concert at a retierment home in April. For that we played things like Phantom of the Opera, Les Misserables (i think i spelled that wrong), Westside Story, and a couple other cheesey transcriptions of old classics.

My sophmore year they played Jupiter from Holst's Planets Suite, and last year we played Mars. We will probably play another movement this year, but I don't know wich one.

We are also probably going to be playing Pines of Rome this year, we talked about it last year, and all the students voted for us to play it, but it's still up to the directors. They've also told us that depending on how we sound and how much we improve we might try tackling Stravinsky's Rite of Spring for our last concert, personaly, I think we can do it.

As for the lower orchrestra (that I'll be playing horn in). Last year they played an arrangment of Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overature, an arrangement of the Firebird Finale (and one of the other movments) by Stravinsky. A piece called March to the Scaffolds and a piece called Wilde Wood Overture. The most "professional" piece we played was George Bizet's Le'Arsinge (I know I spelled that one wrong), basicaly the origional version of Farandole.

So our lower orchrestra seems to be on par with most highschools from what I see from BBW's post. But Full Symphony (the top one) isn't really the typical High School orchrestra...

Really? One of our marching shows was called "Feste Roma", and Pines was one of the movements...can't remember which one, but it was one of them.
