| Piano User | University Music Department Accreditation question... I just had a question for the collegiate professors of music, or anyone who might know the answer to this - is it possible for a music department in a college to exist and give out degrees in music without being accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music? And, what effects does this have on the student who graduates from a university who does not have accreditation by this board and seeks to receive a graduate degree in music at a school that is accredited? |

| Re: University Music Department Accreditation question... Good question, and it is one that has been pondered by many a small music department (including my own). It is possible for a department to exist if unaccredited, and I've known faculty in quite a few departments that chose to remain unaccredited - usually for a wide variety of reasons. I think the lack of accreditation probably wouldn't have much direct affect on students, but I would imagine that it would difficult to attract (and keep) top quality faculty. Just my 2 cents... |

| Piano User | Re: University Music Department Accreditation question... Thanks for the replies! I talked with a professor today, and he also explained it to me that it is actually quite tough to get accredited - one of the requirements is an orchestra, which means that my school has no chance of getting accredited until they have one. |
