| Mezzo Forte User | Re: Who are the people that post here? My name's in my sig. I've met a very small number from here, and I'm usually pretty easy to pick out because: 1) I'm rather tall 2) I'm always wearing a Texas A&M shirt of some sort 3) How many Ags do you see playing an Olds Studio? Between the size, school, and trumpet, you get my screenname. Wish I had gone with my real name, but meh, what does it matter?

I'm aslo interested in why people come here. i assume it is for tips, advice and a shared trumpet-playing community. I have been playing for 7 or 8 years regularly after a 25 year plus layoff after university where I rarley played...enjoying it for the fun this time. |

![]() | Re: Who are the people that post here? It's not necessarily the real name thing but rather, when I get into a discussion with bb123 (fake name) am I really arguing with Phil Smith? Or the opposite. With some people, what is the hidden agenda: Do they own the XYZ trumpet company so they say bad things about the ABC company. You get the idea.

![]() | Re: Who are the people that post here? There will always be an overabundance of keyboard commandos on the internet. I have been on sites where you must register with your real name, and even have to go as far as proving it with a copy of a Gov. issued ID card. Those sites are very heavily moderated, a lot more so than the TM or the TH. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying heavily moderated is better or worse than a lightly moderated forum, just pointing out my observations. In the end, I think most of us are intelligent enough to form our own opinions about the creds of a particular person who posts stupid stuff. As far as my "creds" with regard to trumpet, I dont know crap, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

| Pianissimo User | Re: Who are the people that post here? Seems like even if someone uses their real name they could still misrepresent themselves with the exception of well known people. I wouldn't blame a big name professional for posting under a fake name. If someone like Phil Smith or Doc Severinsen started posting here they might as well get their own forum because we'd be pestering them with all sorts of questions. I like a freer environment moderation-wise although I am glad the religion/politics forums are gone I'd rather this site be about music and the trumpet. FWIW my real name is Reid Lyons (no relation to Kevin in the Atlanta Symphony)

![]() | Re: Who are the people that post here? Well, then there was a case of a guy on TH who kept coming off as a know it all expert and led people to think he was a big name principal orchestra player using a fake name to protect his identity. Well, someone outed him and yes, he's a principal trumpet of an orchesta - some 3rd tier outfit in Canada that no one's ever heard of. |

I think you're talking about a good friend of mine. I also think you're misrepresenting what happened over there on TH. First of all, this guy never claimed to be principal of a major orchestra. It so happens that he IS the principal of a rather prominent outfit up there in Canada - not a "third rate" one, as you put it. Whether or not you've heard of it, well I can't speak to that. As I recall, he did, like many others, try to put some bull$hitters in their place from time to time. And yes, he was eventually "outed" by someone who we went to grad school with (with whom he didn't get along). That doesn't change the fact that he's never given an ounce of advice that he didn't believe in and could back up with solid professional experience. All of his posts are signed with his real name, and he stands behind what he says. He NEVER claimed to be something he wasn't. He's a guy of real integrity and intelligence. I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't misrepresent him anymore. Thanks, Bob White 2nd Trumpet - Charlotte Symphony (some 3rd rate outfit in the south) PS - if by some chance we're talking about different guys, then I sincerely apologize. ![]() | Re: Who are the people that post here? I use my real name and it helps to keep me from getting to off the wall. I am an old guy who is a very average amateur player who plays just well enough to keep his head above water. I have a problem with some who claim brand A is the only horn to have or brand B is a piece of junk, different players need different equipment. I am just so glad that we have good people and pros that give good advise. Dave
