![]() | Re: Who are the people that post here? At least most of his posts are useful to other players, as opposed to simply making snide comments about someone on a different website. I judge people on here, TH and other forums by what they write, not who they are. If someone wants to use their actual name, fine - let them. If someone prefers to stay anonymous, so be it - let their posts be the judge. If their anonymity means you don't read their posts or take their advice, that is fine - you could be missing out, but of course, that doesn't matter - your name is known, therefore you are worth listeing to |

![]() | Re: Who are the people that post here? Are we referring to the same ID? Well, perhaps Nonsense Eliminator has changed his posting style since his identity was revelaed. Back in 2003 his advice was condescending at best. Look at his ID name for Pete's sake, 'Nonsense Eliminator'? How pompous. He acted like anyone that didn't make a living playing trumpet in a pro orchestra had no valuable opinions. Looking back at some of the exchanges I had back on TH I'm embarassed. I was probably being defensive, but I was immature for sure. I'm glad I don't post on TH any more, TM discussions are much more mature and civlized. BTW, if people want to believe I'm 'out of line' and the only one that thought NE was 'less than professional' in his attitude back in those days, well, lets just say I don't care so much what people think of me so I'm being more honest than others. There were a lot of people that didn't think NE was such a swell guy, apparently they think pretending to like someone (aka, being two-faced) is more appropriate than being honest. Also, I've said this before and I'll say it again - if someone is getting 'ganged up on' for voicing an unpopular opinion on this forum that I happen to agree with, I let it be known that I agree with them and their unpopular belief, not just remain silent so as to avoid being labeled one of the trouble-makers. I'll also use clear language so that people know where I stand. If a respected member posts a cooment I think is out of line I will raise my concerns in a PM, not throw it out in a public statement in an attempt to undermine their reputation. Greg

![]() | Re: Who are the people that post here? Without taking sides, I'll have to say that I'm not a fan of internet "handles". It's like meeting or talking to someone who won't tell you their name. It feels a little odd to me, it always has. I've gotten used to it but I'm still not crazy about it. To have someone reduced to a nickname and an avatar just doesn't feel right. What can I say? I'm very much a "people person" and the opportunity to look into someone's face when I speak to them or have a visual representation is worth a lot to me. So, I don't think I've added much to the conversation except for an opinion but that's what it is. Maybe I don't need quite so much mystery in my life, I dunno. Maybe it's the "psychological nudity" of the written word that makes people want to not use their real names. It's a difficult thing, to state a point of view and then have people get on you about silly things like typos and spelling mistakes. It discourages those that might have something important to say but is intimidated because of that kind of criticism. I got into a row with a guy on TH recently about that sort of thing. ML |

![]() | Re: Who are the people that post here? PH, Nobody makes me 'squirm'. I'm recalling my observations in the 2003 timeframe of Nonsense Eliminator's posting style and tone on TH. The only thing that is obvious is that I'm the only person with a memory good enough to recall how often the guy came of as a jerk and the only person who doesn't care about being politically correct. And, in the large scope, I recall how juvenile and adversarial the discussions were on TH. For some weird reason, TH brings out the worst in people. Manny made more valuable contributions to that site than anyone, yet he never felt the need to put people down whom he deemed weren't professional players. He was and is always mindful that his stature in the orchestral world doesn't give him Carte Blanche to lord it over people. Never the less, there were enough juvenile anonymous posters on TH that even Manny had to take a break. A recent stop over there tells me the juvenile, argumentative atmosphere hasn't changed a whole lot. My point? It was people behaving like Nonsense Eliminator in that timeframe that drove a bunch of good people away and led to the creation of this sight. Of course, that may have been a blessing, since TM is a far superior forum, IMO. A second point? Anonymous posting fed a lot of the negative vibes on TH and can really be a negative factor. Greg |
