Bugles Across America does not require you to have been in the service. Just be willing (and capable of doing a good job) to play. They get donated uniforms, etc. and help in that way. They believe that taps should be played live at every funeral for a veteran.

both my grandfathers were veterans of WW2, and only one got the proper TAPS played (bless his heart) and the other was on a CD player. and as I recall, the trumpeter that played was a young lady, probably 3 years older than me, she looked around 16ish, which is nice to see young kids in there (hehe, what am I saying? I'm only 14)

Jim,

Thanks to you, I just joined Bugles Across America. I checked out the web site and found out that Clair Morgan is the group's Kentucky State Director. It is a small world because I play with Clair in my Church Orchestra as well as the Signature Jazz Orchestra here in Louisville. He doesn't know I have sign up for this - yet. I am a USN Aviation Vietnam Veterian, RVAH-12 and will be proud to play Taps for my fellow veterians.

Thank you for bringing this group to my attention.

I have thought about joining myself (hey a trombone player!). I play taps pretty well on the trumpet. But I would need to practice a bit more to be reliable. I may get to that point someday soon.

Dale, it is great you joined BAA (by the way, they recommend Kelly mouthpieces, kind of cool). My uncle flew 103 B-52 missions in Vietnam (he retired shortly after that). Many of my HS friends served in Vietnam (I graduated the year the war ended). Those who have served should, IMO, be honored. Taps is the least we can do for them.

Jim

I agree with Jim and the other posters, who believe our veterans deserve the honor of having Taps played at their funerals by a live musician. I joined Bugles Across America some time ago, but the funerals in my area have, up to now, been held at times I was unavailable due to my work schedule. Fortunately, there is another trumpet player with whom I play in a community band, who is retired and is available most of the time for Taps in my area during week day services. This Saturday, however, I'm taking his place for a service to be held in Galveston. It's not the first time "Gabriel's Trumpet" will have played Taps, but it will be the first time at a live ceremony.

I'm grateful for an organization like Bugles Across America that provides a means for someone like me, who is willing to donate his time, to be placed in contact with families, who would like to honor their departed veterans with a proper burial. I wish I had known about BAA years ago.
