Here's a photo of the "King," along with some rookie Indian playin' through his nose!

I think the rookie Native American is Doc Severensen.
Great photo! I see the URL does say it is Doc.

Re: Al Hirt And His Beautiful Instrument.

The famous Super Bowl Showdown between two greats! I've always been a fan of Al Hirt. He married a woman from Minnetonka, Minnesota (a stone's throw from where I sit) and I'm sorry to say he passed away before I got to meet him. It would have been fun to get a picture of Doc and him together again since Doc is a frequent visitor here.

I have an album of Hirt called "The Greatest Horn in the World". It's one of my favorites.

Re: Al Hirt And His Beautiful Instrument.

He has a really wild Haydn Concerto, it had the first shakes that I ever heard in classical music..............................
My favorite tune from him is "Stella by Starlight!.

Re: Al Hirt And His Beautiful Instrument.

Doc looks real thrilled to be wearing that costume...I remember that Super Bowl..Vikings and Chiefs...One of the Viking's 4 Super Bowl losses..

That recording of Al Hirt playing the Haydn is a classic. I used that, along with recordings by Wynton and Andre as part of a master class I conducted during my graduate degree work. I played the 1st movement from all 3 recording, and had the students critique them. (They did not know who was playing). It made for some "interesting" discussion, as each recording was technically "perfect", but style and interpretation varied quite a bit.

Re: Al Hirt And His Beautiful Instrument.

Going through a used bookstore in Denton one day, passed by the record stands. I found a copy of Al Hirt Live at Carnegie Hall still in the freaking plastic. Tell me how one of those UNT nutjobs didn't grab that?! I love that album, btw.
