Re: Austin Winds?

I was in austin in december and stopped by their shop. They are computer professionals and part time players. (and gear heads They had several destinos, courtois, and their own signature horns. As mentioned, kanstul makes their horns and they are a good value, imo. They (austin winds) tend to like a darker sound, and most of what they had fit that bill. The destinos played great but are pricey.

You also mentioned lawler -they are also great horns at a good value. Definitely give those a try as well.
Good luck
Terry

Re: Austin Winds?

yeah, ive got plenty of time to research. ideally, a big, fat sound (LB), dark and solid w/just a bit of edge when pushed, satin/brush finish (less cleaning more playing) copper bell (they look great, but still need to play one), heavy caps/buttons, "strad" like 3rd slide stop, rings on 1st and 3rd, hook on top. amado water keys, heavy mp receiver........ hey, a guy can dream right? i really do appreciate everyones input. thanks!

Here is a pretty thorough review I posted awhile back on Austin Winds models I tried at TMEA. They do make a gorgeous brushed and lac'd copper model. I thought the horns were terrific. If you have questions after reading the review, lemme know.

hey, thanks a bunch! thats a good thing to hear. there are soooooo many good products out there, i believe when it comes down to it, you just have to nitpick and look at what your pocket can handle. nice write up. that being said, if kanstul makes these horns, are these guys the designers ("david and doug"), collaborating w/kanstul, or how does that work?

Re: Austin Winds?

Felix,
I would love to try some of your horns. I play a Bach ML 43 right now. I've played bach for a long time and never tried anything that wanted to make me switch. I wouldn't know what to do with all the options that you offer on custom horns. But I would like to try some of the stock horns. I live in North Jersey, can I come out to your shop sometime?
Bob

I tried these horns out last year at the DFW Trumpetfest and I was also impressed with them. My understanding is that the horns are made to Austin Horns' specs by Kanstul. I liked the horn w/the Copper Bell as it had a real nice blow and sound to it. I thought the price was reasonable for the product. When I get the money for my next horn, that horn will be under consideration.

I think PerunaPete hit it on the head--Kanstul makes them according to AustinWinds' design specs. Give them a call and ask them--I'm sure they'd be happy to talk about it.

Re: Austin Winds?

i may have to do that. it looks similar to the "zeus" model and we all know how much controversy surrounds those for some reason or another. just didnt want to end up in a situation like that. sounds like a lot of good things ending in a great trumpet @ good price. thanks.
