I'd have some serious second thoughts about having spent 3K+ for a Chicago Yamaha C and then essentially destroying it's value by putting a bell from a different manufacturer on it. By the time you add up all the parts and labor you're looking at a top dollar price for an instrument that will have little resale value and you're not really sure how it's going to turn out. For the kind of money you're talking about you should expect the horn to play they way you want to right out of the box without having to fool around with it. If it we're my money I'd sell the Yamaha and shop until you find a trumpet that is satisfactory.

Re: Bach bell, yamaha body?

A good repairman could easily swap out the bells. If it didn't work you could always put the Yamaha bell back on.

Would it play the same? I don't know.

Would the plating be a bit messed up? Yes

Do it Tom! No guts not glory!

Re: Bach bell, yamaha body?

Wow, I love the enthusiasm TM.

Yeah, I'm pretty unhappy with the Yamaha. I think the sound lacks character. I tried it for many months and played many performances on it, but at the end of the day my stock 229/25H just had the right sound.

But....you can't beat the way that thing plays!

So I pose a question to the TM:

What gives a Bach it's trademark sound? The bell?

What makes a Yamaha so easy to play? Probably not the bell (although it does help a little).

Would a Yamaha with a 229 still sound like a Yamaha?

Does anybody have a beater 229 I could buy off of them?

Re: Bach bell, yamaha body?

Tom, A good friend of ours got ahold of a Yamaha Artist Model leadpipe and tuning slide and put that on his Bach 22925h.

He goes by the name of TopGun on these boards

That might be your holy grail.

Re: Bach bell, yamaha body?

IMHO the leadpipe probably has alot to do with it in combination with the 229 bell. There is no way that H pipe is going to play as easy as some of the stuff Yamaha puts out. But maybe thats the compromise you have to deal with.

Re: Bach bell, yamaha body?

If Yamaha could work out exactly what it is that gives Bachs the Bach sound, nobody would be using Bachs anymore (as has been said, the Yamahas are very playable).

The best Yamabach (or Bachaha) has been a Xeno C with a Bach bell on (and MK leadpipe and tuning slide - all from Will Spencer). Easily a match for the Artist C for playability and sounded better than any Bach I have tried/heard. The fact that it also played with excellent intonation was a nice bonus.
