Too Bad

It's too bad that John and Wilma aren't doing things the way they use to. I had them repair and replate a badly damaged Schilke MII two years ago. They did an excellent job. It looked and played like new (and still does). My oldest daughter uses it in community band when she's not playing her cornet. I was going to have a vintage King Superior cornet refurbed but could not get in touch with them. Now I know why!

Dave Mickley is on a distinguished road
I would highly recomend Charlie Melk, he just rebuilt an old King cornet that belonged to my father-in-law that had gone through WW II and had all kinds of damage. he had to make a new lead pipe, tuning slide outer and inner tubes and fix major dents and creases. the only thing that didn't come out perfect was where the bell was split but it still came out great. the price wasn't that bad considering all the work that was done. when my wife saw the horn she almost cried, it was that good. a big thank you to Charlie. Well, I lose my bet! I was concerned that I'd never see my Olds A6 Shepherds Crook Cornet again. But It's Home!!

Got a message from John last week, and the horn was picked up today.

Communications HORRIBLE, Quality (gold plate) FANTASTIC.

I remember the line from a high school poem "We Only Serve Who Stand And Wait". The wait was painfull, the result is excellent.

A.N.A. Mendez will become famous soon enough
Isn't that a relief? I hate that not knowing feeling, I would almost prefer to know I'm getting worked, at least you know where you stand.......javascript:emoticon('')

So come on, Bill... hang up a "brag photo" for us!

Cheers from out here where it's been in the high 'teens for temperature lately (about to change to more seasonal this weekend though... good thing the Grey Cup is indoors)

That's fantastic, glad you got your horn back, I would have thought it was a goner too. Did he tell you what the damage was? How does it play? I wonder if someone gave him a heads up on this post and rattled his tree? Kinda funny, this got no traction at all over at TH. At any rate, congrats, that's a truly rare and nice horn. I'd be interested in hearing what you can tell about it that sets it apart from the common Ambassadors.

I played the A6 at rehearsal last night and it is a great horn! But no, he never told me what the damage was, and I asked a number of times. Looking it over carefully I can't tell either, and all the parts are correct?

I'm still trying to see what the difference is between the A6 and other Olds cornets. I did notice that the tuning slide only installs one way due to the conical changes. I'll dig out my Opera cornet and do some side-by-side comparisons over the holidays.

The other happy news is my just won Olds Custom C trumpet arrived today. So I now have 2 of the most rare Olds horns, they made about 300 of the A6 and about 140 of the Custom C. And of course, I love all my 'children' the same!
