Re: Best Flugelhorn

I played on an 80's Getzen Capri for 17 years before I found something better - my Rembrandt. If I hadn't bought the Rembrandt, I would've bought a Conn Vintage One. I played it side by side with the Kanstal, and liked the Conn much better. I'm one of those people who prefer a large bore flugel, but I still liked the Conn - unusual for me. As for the worst flugel I've played recently, it's the Yamaha Bobby Shew. It feels like a cheap plastic trumpet to me when I play it - especially after the Rembrandt! I much prefer the older Yamaha flugels to the newer ones. I occasionally play one of the Navy's Yamaha flugels instead of my own, but they all feel incredibly stuffy and out of tune compared to what I'm used to! I guess that's the difference in spending a couple of thousand more for a custom horn.........

Re: Best Flugelhorn

The new Stage 1 California Flugel, Hands Down. I have never heard a flugel with a better tone or played a flugel that was more "buttery"

Re: Best Flugelhorn

I have played on B&H Sovereign, Getzen Eterna 4 valve, Yamaha 631 and Besson Sovereign 947, until I had the chance to test different models of Amati, Jupiter, Bach, Yamaha and Conn at the same time, with the same mouthpiece Denis Wick 4BFL, at an exhibition. I tried all the instruments over and over again, and the instrument that fell into my taste every time i touched it, was the Conn Vintage1, silverplated, because it didn't have the trombonesound as many of the others. (People often calls the horn "trombone in disguise...") I was looking for a flugel with a sound which could blend into a english style brass band, and also could be used for jazz and church seremonies. This horn suits me very well and I am happy that I bought it right there.

Re: Best Flugelhorn

I started with a Getzen in the early 70s.

I switched to a Courtois 154 in 1976. That was the best, for me flugelhorn I ever played. I didn't think any other flugelorn would be as good.

Two years ago I played an Eclipse flugelhorn. That is, for me, the best I have ever played.

I use an Eclipse, red brass bell, scratched and lacquered.

This is MY flugelhorn.

..and yes, I have the first valve slide in backwards in the picture.

Flip Oaks WT, built by Kanstul, tweaked by Flip. Never thought I'd sell my Couesnon, but I did, no regrets.
