Seems to me, I recall that originated with Big Bill Broonzy (black delta-blues guitar player).

Correct me if I am wrong (?) ....

I was sure this is Satchmo's words.
I had heard it somewhere, but couldn't remember where..

Fortunately the internet an Google is invented, so I was able to
find a backup for the quotation again... or else, I would have been on very thin ice...

Here it is:

st.paul

Another one here:

MySpace.com - The Missoula Folklore Society - MISSOULA, Montana - Folk / Bluegrass / Indie - www.myspace.com/missoulafolkloresociety

and another here:

The Weepies: No tears for the happy couple | Oakland Tribune | Find Articles at BNET.com

But sometimes someone dumps lies on the WWW and makes up new myths..
so may be I am tricked and you are right, who knows?

Anyway, it is a vey good explanation

I have an Olds and a Reynolds, both made in the 1960s, very similar in construction, tone, feel. I love both of them, must sell one someday........

OK ... good research.

Can't recall (?) where / how I thought Big Bill Broonzy said the same thing. Everybody's dead, now.

I haven't played them all, but my Stage 1 Classic is the best flugel I've laid my hands on..

Re: Best Flugelhorn

Since you asked... I just got my new Calicchio flugelhorn last week and it is incredible! It’s the copper belled version crafted by master horn builder John Duda. I my opinion a flugel should be approached like the unusual beast that it is and should respond that way. With an effortless dark, rich, warm sound. John captured those qualities and much more! The intonation is spot on without a thought of any chop calisthenics. The valve action is as smooth as glass.

I played a session on it yesterday where the producer was looking for a few muted trumpet solos… after hearing this flugelhorn, I only used the harmon on one track! The engineer said he’d never heard a flugel so in tune! I highly recommend this horn to any serious trumpet player looking that true flugel sound of years gone by.

The funny thing about this is that my daily driver is a Calicchio S1S trumpet, which has one of the deepest richest tone I’ve ever played. More flugel-ish sounding than most trumpets throughout the range of the horn! Calicchio has captured the true essence of theses horns. John, you’re the best! Thank you Calicchio for making my life a lot easier!
I hope this helps in your quest.

All there is is personal "favorites" that have absolutely nothing to do with "best".
I am sure that Yamaha sells more flugels than any other brand (maybe even all brands put together). That only means that they have targeted their markets better than the rest.
The sooner you forget about "phantasizing" about the best and start playing EVERYTHING that you can get your hands on, the faster you will find something that appeals to your eye, brain and ears. Everything else is a waste of practice time!
Now go out and do the right thing!
This was a while ago but I totally agree! Especially as horns get bigger (Like euphoniums!) it is impossible to perfectly mass produce them.

Has anyone heard of Taylor Trumpets? I think they make a lot of custom flugelhorns and trumpets or something like that. I think they are in England.

Re: Best Flugelhorn

I have heard great things about the Kanstul flugels...Have not gotten to play one yet, but hope to soon. Bottom line is to find one that you like..I have a Blessing that meets my needs. By no means the best horn, but as little as I play Flugel, it works well for me.

Correction ... Tony Scodwell's flugelhorn is not a modified Kanstul. It is a unique design. However, Kanstul does manufacture Tony's design for him. He did pick one of Kanstuls existing valve blocks to work with. All the bracing, main tuning slide crook, bell taper, and bell bend radious are all unique, and to Tony's specifications. Once made they go to Tony for play testing, and any tweeking that might need to be done before being sent to Chuck Levin's : Everything in Music : 301-946-8808 for sale.

All the best.
