The top 5 orchestras in the US: NY, Chicago, Boston, Cleveland, and Philadephia are all using Bach or Yamaha C trumpets.
Yes, this is my first C trumpet. I don't have much of a preferance to any brand in particular. However, I am not a big fan of Bach. Never really have been, but since the strike and with Dana Messina being a corporate crook, I don't care much to support any company which he owns. If I find a Bach which I like, I would consider it, especially if it is the best horn I try; but I am more likely to buy something else.

In that case, pick up a Yamaha 6000 series C (cheap) or 9000 series (expensive) and you'll be set. I'd avoid the Xenos, never got into their sound.

Re: C Trumpet Opinions

Well, I figured out a couple of the horns I want to try, between reviews here, Brass Review, and tm. In no particular order:
Shilke s22c, Wild Thing, Kanstal 1510, B&S Challenger 3136/2, Blackburn (a bit pricy, but if I can get my hands on one), Stage 1, Callet, Eclipse, Lawler TLC-3, Yam Chicago&6445, Bach Chicago/229/239, ZeuS Guarnerius.
If anyone knows a good way to try any of these, without having to do a full pay, or visit the store in person, that would be great. I have already looked at the Wild Thing trial policy, but cant spend $250 to try a trumpet(full price to try and refund less $250 for restocking), and the ZeuS doesn't have a trial policy, which is a shame because I love my Bb, but don't want to risk a bad horn without a trial/return policy.
I have tried a Bach 229 and didnt like it, and a 239 that wasn't too bad, but would like to find others to try first. Those are the only 2 C trumpets within a 2 hour drive of where I am, unless you want to go to low end "student" model horns.

Well I recommended Yamaha too

Also I happen to play an Eclipse C trumpet which I bought becuase it was easier playing than my Bach with similar sound. Of course if you are looking to win orchestra auditions you may want to stick with a Yamaha Artist Chicago.

WWBW and Giardinelli have a 45 day trial period I don't remember paying a restoking fee if I did it was modest.

The Van Cleave C Trumpet is our best seller.
The leadpipe is a cut down Bb pipe and the bell is a mix of a Bb and C bell.
It has a warm sound for a C Trumpet that many really like.

Here is the web page information on the horn:

Re: C Trumpet Opinions

Nplotts1,

I would suggest, if you can, borrowing something from a friend or teacher or even a local store before you start playing around with brand new instruments. I'm a big believer that, like with driving a new transmission on a car, a player can actually influence the play of a horn by how they play on it. I'd say, get used to playing C trumpet first. Like someone else said on this post, it is a completely different instrument and why toy around with multiple C trumpets when your C trumpet playing will change drastically in one month.

If you're doing lots of orchestra playing and everyone in your trumpet section or geographic area is playing Yamaha, which used to be the case in Georgia and the southeast (I think), it will make your life easier to blend in with them if you're playing the same thing. Of course if you're doing more chamber music or just playing alone, brand doesn't matter so much.

To everyone else...

I hadn't even heard of these Bach Chicago C's until reading about them on here. They should adverstise better. I don't know anything about them aside from what I've read, but I think it's funny that they're reverting to a design from the 1940's.

Also, no one has mentioned the Laskey C trumpets... Pinc is it??? Those might be worth checking out.

Matt

Re: C Trumpet Opinions

Hey,
I've recently bought a new C, and after testing a fair few I decided on the winner. My budget wasn't quite up to $3500, but if you are willing to spend that much do not walk past the Yamaha Chicago. I fyou want to spend a bit less, the I'd go for the Yamaha Xeno (which is what I ended up buying). I tried many bach's and Conn's, but found that they were both far more difficult to adapt to from playing a Bb horn. That said, they were all good horns as well.
Also remember, you want a C trumpet that will blend, as it is primarily a section instrument - so you may have to go with whatever the other guys in the orchestra are playing (and that will generally be Bach or Xeno/Chicago).

Re: C Trumpet Opinions

I know I have taken a leave of absence for a while, there was just no way to afford one with coming right back into school this semester. I have tried a few horns, and the one I kept going back to was the Yamaha Chicago C. The only thing is i really would like to spend less. I have played a few 229 and 239 bachs, and not liked any of them. 1 was fair (the 239), but not as nice as the Yamaha.
I will ask again, on about the ZeuS, has anyone played one, preferably in the Copper or Silver finish? if so, how did you like it?

With summer coming up, and a possible job offer coming my way (interview tomorrow) I will actually be able to start getting loan paperwork in order and maybe save some money so the loan won't have to be as big.
