![]() | Hi Lee. I have the parts made in 3 different shops:Austria and Switzerland, after that ,the parts come to me for some modifications and after that they go to the Eclipse shop in UK for finishing and plating. All of the parts are made per my design and instructions. After they are finished, all horns are tested by pros in UK and Germany, before they get to me. ![]() | I had a Callet Jazz (large bore, reverse lead pipe and matt finish) as a 'loan' trumpet from First Class Brass whilst my Strad was being fixed. I found it pretty good, but too loud and projecting and lacking in subtlety for my tastes. To me, a real delicacy of response at low volumes is really important in a trumpet, and the Callet just didn't have it. Maybe it was just that it didn't suit my playing style, but I preferred my Bach (well, after FCB had sorted it out anyway). Rich. |

![]() | Lee and Van, Here's the story on the Callet D/Eb: I bought it from my favorite store in Des Moines, knowing that there were some problems with certain notes - but sure that my repairmen up here in the Twin Cities would be able to figure out what to do. I knew that it had to be a good horn that just needed some tweaking. The first repairman that I took it to in Minneapolis tested the horn, gave up, and asked me for around $60 for doing nothing. The second repairman tested the connections where the first valve slide tubing is soldered onto the valve section. There was a leak where not enough solder had been used. Within 1/2 hour he re-soldered, and the horn no longer leaked...and those weird notes were fixed. I then called Mr. Callet to alert him to the soldering problem. He said, "I never made any D/Eb's. Kanstul made those for me, and I did the final adjustments." I later learned that this was true for all of Callet's horns, at least back then. When I talked to Ziggy Kanstul about the soldering, he blamed Callet. Answer to your question: Kanstul made the horn Moral of Story: Depend on a good repairman |

Many players find the modular mouthpiece systems to work good in dialing in the Callet's. Most ML bore trumpets like Bach's commonly require larger and deeper mouthpieces for the desired sound. Take that same mouthpiece and put it on a Callet Jazz and certainly the Jazz will become more difficult to control at lower volumes. It is no surprise to me that a mouthpiece that works well on a Bach would not work well on a Callet Jazz. Tweaking on the mouthpiece end will eventually end in success. Not to mention that so many of the used Callet Jazz trumpets have had their leadpipes and/or bells hand tuned and adjusted it's not quite accurate to form a conclusion unless actually playing a new or un unaltered used one. However the new main tuning slide options will help to make the Jazz even more versatile and compliment even more players without the need of mouthpiece changing.
