I have 2 Cannonball trumpets at home for testing. One of them is a new prototype 789RL which has a 51/4 bell and a reversed leadpipe. I can't tell anything about the effect of the stone but can tell that they both play great. Fast response, smooth valves. Tuning is very easy. They come with extra heavy valve caps. The engreaving in the bell is very nice too.

I have 2 raw brass models to test (725 and 789RL).

Re: Cannonball Trumpet

I currently own a Black Nickel Plated 725, and it plays very well. I've had it for about 2 1/2 years and have "broken it in" enough to know how it sounds in all situations, jazz, band ensamble and even marching (only BOA GN's) anyway, I do have one problem with this horn. It sounds good for small group Jazz and even in concert band, but in a larger setting (Big Band or Marching) the sound is too dark/dead to be heard over the ensamble
In other words, it doesn't have that brass "sizzle" when you need it. I think a brighter sounding mouthpeice would help. A Bach 3D perhaps (I have another post on this topic...) Otherwise, the horn is great, and blows freely and has very good Monel valves, i do reccomend a different finish...black looks very Ego Machine, but Silver or raw brass may give you the sizzle your looking for.

Re: Cannonball Trumpet

I played a couple of them last week at Sam Ash on 48th st. in NYC.
They were very , very good. Good pitch, good resistance and well put together. They were some of the best horns I have played in a while..........then Josh Landress handed me a horn that he had just put together. It was a dream!. I was hanging with a buddy from Philly, making the rounds testing horns. He was looking for a brighter horn than the Bach he played for the last century. He fell in love with Josh' horn. It is HOT!
I think he is going to get rid of a couple very good Bachs to get this gem.

Re: Cannonball Trumpet

I played a friend's a couple of years ago - it was a gunmetal finish. I know he had bought it for looks - he buys everything he owns for looks - but it was a decent player. It was 1000 times better than the black LA Sax horn he'd been playing before that(anything would be!), but not as good as my Yamaha - a little hard to center.

Re: Cannonball Trumpet

I played one a while back and really liked it. I can't remember the model, but I remember it had a huge bell on it. It was very responsive and played well in tune. I wasn't so wild about the stone on the horn, but I did like it on the valve buttons. I didn't have my own horn along for comparison, but I was impressed with it. I know my trumpet teacher from years ago teaches out of that store and he's now playing on one. He plays in small Jazz combos and has always preferred a very lively responsive horn. My first pro horn was a light weight Yamaha that I bought off of him in 1983. I still play it occassionally, it's like an old friend.

Re: Cannonball Trumpet

I work at a music store, and this week is our 'pro days' sale, where we bring a bunch of horns from other stores and Yamaha Canada for people to try. I've had a blast with about 35 great horns that showed up at the end of last week.

In the group we got 5 Cannonball trumpets. 3 789's and 2 725's, in varying finishes. Having played a lot of different horns over the years, and plenty of the new brands that keep popping up, I was completely ready to play some more poorly put together but extra glammed up horns. Now, I can't say that they are my favourites (with every Yamaha Artist and Custom model in, plus a bunch of LAs and RG Xenos), but these horns really are decent horns. Especially for the money, they're a steal for the $13?? price tag. I like the 725 model a lot more... the big bell(5.5"!!)/reverse leadpipe feels too spread out and unfocused for me on the 789.

Apparently they just came out with a line of clarinets. Search them online and have a look at the pictures. Snake Charmer-ific.

Re: Cannonball Trumpet

I played one at a store and it was very nice. The upper register came much easier than a bach strad. The reversed leadpipe seemed to be the reason for it. I'd love one......One day.

Thanks for the update... I have been very pleased with mine and do love the sound, especially for any type of group jazz playing. The registers are all well rounded and the sound is full and rich, although i did pay more than $13XX for it, should have seen your shop.... only im in the states
