Re: Cheap Flugelhorn?

A VERY good cheap flugel would be the E.M. Winston. One of my friends owns one, and I find I actually like playing it better than my B&S!

....My friend got this flugel for $75. No work on it needed.

The sound is what you need from a flugel, the feel is smaller bore (something I have found I like much better). The intonation is solid. The valves are somewhere between Yamaha and old Kings (not horrible, but nothing great). The silver plating is thin and not evenly distributed, and I imagine the lacquer work is nothing to write home about.

Overall, something to look at that is under that price mark.

...Sometimes you can find a Weril flugel for dirt cheap. Those horns are not bad at all.

Re: Cheap Flugelhorn?

...While I am thinking about it, the Getzen Capri models are great horns normally under the radar. The bore is biggish, but it doesn't FEEL huge like some of the large bore flugels. The sound is also very, VERY nice.

I had to use a player's Capri in a church gig, and I was very well pleased with it.

Re: Cheap Flugelhorn?

I actually have a customer that has a nice Jupiter Flugel for sale.
here is the description from him.

"Jupiter Flugelhorn in good condition for sale
good condition with a couple of minor dents on the bell, and two tiny spots where the lacquer is missing. Valves are good and the intonation is very good. The horn is very easy to play on which makes the jump from the trumpet much more comfortable.

Facts:
Jupiter JFH 846 Flugelhorn
S/N: 405178
Finish: Black lacquer

I think he is asking $500.it is located in Europe.
I have pictures as well,if needed.

Re: Cheap Flugelhorn?

I am very impressed with the Jupiters. I played an old Tribune with the Dizzy bell, and really enjoyed playing it for a jazz concert.

DHL does an amazing job with overseas shipping, as a little side-note..

Re: Cheap Flugelhorn?

For real cheap, I gambled and bought a used but like new Amati flugel on ebay for $150, shipping included. I didn't expect much, but actually it's not that bad. It can be played reasonably well in tune and has an acceptable dark sound. It has a smaller wrap, like a darn good Bohm Meinl flugel I had years back.

Re: Cheap Flugelhorn?

I've had a King 650 for the last 20 years or so, and it's not at all bad. I've used it in big band and small group settings, been reasonably happy next to a vintage Couesnon in our section. I had a 3rd valve trigger put on it (Yamaha part, I think), which helped out with the inevitable intonation issues.

There was one just on ebay, but it ended yesterday unfortunately...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...2907&rd=1&rd=1

Anyway, that gives you a ballpark used price ($400). It's a pretty decent horn.

Now what I'd *really* like is the high-end Kanstul, but I have to earn my new Selmer Concept TT trumpet first

Re: Cheap Flugelhorn?

Used Yamaha or Kanstul would be my suggestion
