Scotter, Walt, and Toots are right. If you can't hold back though, ask what you can have for $700 from their used inventory. I followed Mr. Donaldson's advice and bought a K-Modified for about $700. Sticker shock pretty much numbed me when I came back because 25+ years ago we were selling Bachs for $400. To clarify, Jim Donaldson wasn't hawking Selmer horns, but he made the point one can pick up a great used horn for about $700. I paid $680 for my K. At the time, it made sense to me, and I do not regret how I went about it. All the Best, Richard Oliver | |

![]() | Re: Dillon's Tomorrow Thanks for all your help guys...good advice. I played many horns yesterday for about 3 hrs. I didn't buy anything! Restraining myself was hard. I really have to say that Dillon's is really great....no sales pressure, just come in and play anything you want, and then leave! It was a very worthwhile experience as now I know what I do and don't like. I thought I would like the lightweight horns, but I didn't. Especially the YTR-8310z....man it sounded stuffy (i played two of them, both were the same) To make a long story short, I really enjoyed playing some old strads they had hanging there. (All 37's varying in age). The warmth of the tone far outweighed the lightweight model's marginal improvement in ease of play. (I played new Kanstul's, Xeno's and YTR-6000 series too with the same great results). What I really liked as a brand new strad 72 w/ reverse lead. Don't know if it was a pre or post strike model. My dad, who's a professional trombonist, said that one sounded the best. But for $1800...not right now. I'll wait another 3-6 months and give my chops some more time to improve. Again, thanks for the great advice! |

![]() | Re: Dillon's Tomorrow Old, Way to go! Yes, resisting the impluse to buy is difficult. Keep us posted on your search, practice, musings, etc. After a year of practicing, I bought a new Bb. She hasn't arrived yet, and I'm glad I waited. The year gave me a chance to see what's what playing wise, practice daily except for a 2 month "aw phoeey" when I got discouraged because I couldn't find ensembles in our small town. If you keep at it and begin playing in bands, you'll have another source to augment your horn investigations. The players in the section. You get to know someone, make friends, and you also can try their horns. The time also gives you lots of observations to consider from other trumpet players here and you might want to check out the Trumpet Herald forum too. Since you're in the east coast, if you can make to Amherst, MA when the ITG (International Trumpet Guild) conference occurs in May/June, there will be oodles of manufacturers with their horns to try. It's 2,000 miles from me so I won't be there. But Banff, Canada, will be hosting the conference next year, and it's 800 miles. I'm looking forward to attending then. All the Best, Richard Oliver p.s. my layoff was 25 years before I resumed playing. Last edited by Richard Oliver; 01-26-2007 at 11:30 AM. |

| Pianissimo User | Re: Dillon's Tomorrow If you are not taking lessons - might give it a try. Restarting with good habits is helpful. Ask other trumpeters who they use - and listen to how they play. When I restarted my wife suggested that if I was going to continue to embarrass myself on that horn (also a Getzen) I might as well get lessons. I still embarrass her I think.
