![]() | Gary, I just wanted to tell you my last post is in no way any criticism against the Eclipse or any other trumpet you are playing.Studpidly, I didn't realize Gary, and you had any affiliation with a product when I started writing my last post about Calicchio’s slightly different air flow feel. My belief about trumpets are, there is enough room for any quality trumpet to flourish in the market and no all quality trumpets are made to do the same function. I have not played an Eclipse, but I plan to do so. I'll be at Namm, Anaheim and hope to try one at that point. Also, I am not under the illusion that every Calicchio made in the last 10 years has been a “masterpiece “. With any line of handmade products, Certain aspects start to change over time, not always for the best and have to be corrected. I'm a realist in that respect. Why would someone in the old days, go to Giardinelli's in New York and try 10 trumpets of the same models to get the best one if they all came out the same. I've had some NY Bach's that have been fantastic and some were dogs (I actually sold them to Doc S., for a while he was buying any NY Bach he could get his hands on) I love the Schilke line for what they can do. I have the Schilke picc. P5-4 gold-plated Eb3-L , Eb4-l , 1962 B6l-b gold plated , and a 1964 B5-l gold plated. To me, Schilke is a class act and a consistent winner as far a trumpets are concerned. I also just picked up a Stomvi picc. Gold Plated Master with an interchangeble gold bell, sterling silver bell and wood bell. Great, great picc.( I got that out here at Cambrass where I tried 5 picc’s of the same type and the consistency was absolutely amazing, Stomvi is also a great line of trumpets ) , plus I still have my 1965 “Maurice André “Selmer pick. plus a 1965 Bach herald picc.. Bb, A and G (almost in G, I should say) What I'm trying to say is that a well made trumpet always has room in this so called " trumpet community " and I have Calicchio's, Bach's, Schilke's, Bessons , Lebalnc's ( 1964 Al Hirt Leblanc bought from Al Hirt's family after his death ) Selmer's, 3 Large bore Martins ( from Mic Gillette, one with a 7' bell ). I want Eclispe to be a successful line and a brand that will push the bar even higher for all the other trumpet manufactueres to hit. Larry PS – don’t tell my wife I just got another trumpet. Sometimes, the little women just doesn’t understand, plus I now take up 2 rooms with all this trumpet junk. |

![]() | Larry - I am in the Eclipse camp, for sure - because I love the horns. I don't get paid to brag about them. I am first and foremost a trumpet player, wich means I will tell people when I like a horn, and when I hate one, regardless of who makes it. I will find fault with every horn on the market, maybe because I'm just a grumpy guy, I dunno.... 8) There are things that aren't perfect about the Eclipse Anyway, let me stop rambling here and I'll get to the point. There are a lot of horns I play that I would consider to be VERY fine horns. There are a few Schilkie's out there that have blown my skirt up in the past, I like one or two of Kanstul's horns, I used to play a callet superchops, and liked it a lot. I still think that if you find a "good" strad, that horn will be as good as any you will ever play. (now finding that diamond in the rough, that's another story) The 1s2 is a very fine horn. The critique I gave a few posts back is about as honest as I can get; the bad was as genuine as the good. Nobody benifits from a dishonest review, If I like a horn by Calicchio I'll tell you openly - and I know that sounds wierd from someone who is affiliated with a specific manufacturer... I personally have found my horn, my company that I will be doing business with for quite some time. I know that everyone will not share that opinion. If you like a Calicchio, bach, WT, Kanstul, Schilke, whatever - If that's your horn that makes you happy, BUY IT. I generally like large bore horns, and the .460 Eclipse is the first ML horn that has 'done it' for me, actually better than the L bore horns I've played. For someone who is comfy with a 1s2, GOOD I stand by Eclipse as the best out there, but If someone else buys another horn and is tickled pink with it, I'm tickled pink for them. Making music is what it's all about...
