![]() | Re: Flugel shopping at Chuck Levins My mummy bought me a Yamaha flugel for my 18th b'day (21 years ago). Still play it and like it more than any other flugel I've played.Other professional players who have tried it have offered me money for it as they say the early Yamahas are great. This seems to be a current trend. Everyone wants to play and older horn like a Olds Recording. Most guys who have a super new horn, have an old one as a safety blanket. |

From Kanstul site: Guide to Flugelhorn Tapers Confused about tapers? We used to be, too! Here's the scoop on flugelhorn mouthpiece tapers. If you are using the wrong taper, you may be experiencing poor intonation and response! LARGE Morse taper Commonly known as Standard Taper, the LARGE Morse taper is used by Yamaha, Getzen, Callet, Benge/King/Conn, Holton and older Kanstul 1525 fluglehorns. SMALL Morse taper The so-called “Bach Taper.” Bach, Courtois, newer Couesnon, Kanstul 1525 and some European flugelhorns use SMALL Morse taper. FRENCH (straight) taper Also known as Couesnon Taper, French taper is used by original Couesnons, Flip Oakes "Wild Thing," Kanstul CCF 925, and original F. Besson flugelhorns.

![]() | Re: Flugel shopping at Chuck Levins Well.......all that sure thickens the plot. I hope and pray that someone at Levins will have the knowledge to help me find the right mouthpiece. Is the rim size on a flugel bach 3c the same as my trumpet bach 3c? If so then I think I'll use the flugel one as long as the shank is right. If not, can someone tell me a comparable mpc in the three different shank styles just to make sure I don't go wrong? Thanks for all the info guys.......keep it coming

I have the Kanstul Signature 1525 Flugelhorn (from Chuck Levin, but drop-shipped directly from the Kanstul factory). It came with no mouthpiece and requires a Bach shank. I found a Bach 3C, so that's what I'm using, which seems fine. I'll experiment with others as time goes by, but if you're using a 3C on the trumpet, it would seem wise to stay with the same for minimum problems transitioning from one to the other instrument.

![]() | Re: Flugel shopping at Chuck Levins From above link..... It's gone....[My reason for selling has nothing to do with the horn itself. Now that the valves have been repaired, they're awesome, even better than my Bach. Everything else works well too. The slides slide, the spit valves spit, etc. No, the problem isn't the horn, the problem is me. I've discovered that I just don't like my sound after it's been flugel-ized. I feel like the flugelhorn mellows out my sound too much, killing the intensity and masking the emotion. It kind of reminds me of playing the French Horn. Yuck!] I have a Jupiter RL and cannot fault it...intonation is exceptional for a flugel. When purchased.... I compared it to Courtois..Yamaha and Bach........the Jupiter was great...especially the price. I have not had the chance to play a Kanstul so keep an open mind. ![]() | Re: Flugel shopping at Chuck Levins The newer Jupiters have better valves, a nickel/ monel mix. I don't know when exactly they went to these but they are very good. I have a "new" Jupiter 846RL and I think its a very good flugel, no problem with valves, plays fine... plus it's reletively cheap.

I had a Scodwell trumpet and it was one of the best trumpets I've ever played. I'd be afraid to try the Scodwell flugel because at $2500 there's just no way I'd spend that much for a horn that gets such limited use (in my case). But yeah, I bet the Scodwell flugel is among the best out there... his trumpets certainly are too.

| Fortissimo User | Re: Flugel shopping at Chuck Levins I believe you'll find that the Jupiter flugels (as well as other trumpet-family horns) changed in and around or about 1995 or so. I picked up a new 846L in 1999 and it is really a nice horn for very little $$. Still works fine although I did have one particular QC issue... when the holes were drilled through for the water keys they left a bit of a burr on the inside of the tubing which prevented good drainage. A very careful "reaming" with just the slightest oversize drill bit took care of that issue and the horn has been fine ever since. NO valve problems. |
