Yeah, Dave. You are right... it's gotta feel and work good for the individual.

Anyway...these are all some interesting designs. Another testament to the interesting "trumpet/flugel" times we are in.

Re: Flugelhorn Selection

Hmmm. now that makes it all very clear There's a vote for nearly every flugel on the market. Kanstul have the edge by one vote. The stomvi looks pretty(& being a girl that's important) , The "fat boy" is certainly different.

Maybe we should start a sound thread where we can all post examples of the various tones of each instrument. Would be interesting.

Re: Flugelhorn Selection

I have a Kanstul and love it. I also loved my old Bach, but I wanted to go in a different direction with the sound. If I changed again it would be for an Eclipse or I might get Jason Harrelson to modify my Kanstul.

I'm on a super tight budget the past couple years so I will probably play what I have for the rest of my life.

Kanstul ZKF 1525 with a silver finish.

Re: Flugelhorn Selection

I tried the Phat Boy in my local music store....for me it would be an acquired taste. I play the Flugel a lot less than my trumpet so I bought a relatively inexpensive Jupiter with the rose bell... the horn is comfortable with immediate response and clear feedback.....the Phat Boy felt huge and awkward to me but it was well made and the sound was great...albeit abit removed...probably because of the heavier material...I quess it would project well.

In fairness it was a fairly short session awhile ago and I was probably overwhelmed by how different it was visually....I think it is still in the shop....I will ask to have another go on it and report back.

May I ask where this music store is located? I'm impressed that they would have a Phat Boy in stock. Sounds like a store I could learn to love!

Re: Flugelhorn Selection

Hi Bandman

Unfortunately for you it is here in the UK..... The owner loves trumpets and used to play...he was watching a TV programme and saw some guy playing the Phat Boy......he thought it was really "cool" so he ordered one in! It is the same shop I got my Taylor Chicago 11 Lite from......he had it in stock! If a customer is fairly interested in something he will usually get it in....no obligation. His current selection of horns includes ...Selmer TT, Courtois Evolution 11, Yamaha 9335NYS New York and both Chicago and New York C trumpets, Schagerl Gansch Rotary, Dione and Penelope, Conn Vintage One, most Bach Strad models, Kanstul's, Taylor Chicago 11 Standard and Phat Boy!!! ...the list goes on...the only horn he has not got that is on my list is a great playing, mint, large bore 49 Martin Committee!! It would be great to have one for my 60th birthday in 2009.

It is a mixed blessing to have this Candy Store so close!!!!

Re: Flugelhorn Selection

Dave....here's that other flugel I was talking about (Stage 1 Classic):

Apparently, this has 4 bell options - Yellow Brass, Rose Brass, Copper or Bronze. Plus, in looking at the bell shape, the taper appears to be a bit tighter than my Bach or some of the others that are pictured in this thread? Therefore, might have the sound the OP was looking for? I don't know...just tossing it out there. It's how the individual sounds on any model. I have also heard of yet "another" model in this line that is forthcoming. No pics on that yet.

Anyway, as I said, this one was a bit more conventional looking - still gorgeous. I am into that finish these days.
