It's from Weber, a small expert workshop in South Germany. Maybe soon available on the US market by our own Felix? We'll see... You'll hear from me soon, Felix (sorry, vacation time )!

Re: Flugelhorn Selection

As others have said flugels are all very different and the mouthpiece I have found is critical.

When I was looking I tried out:

Yamaha 631, 731, Shew
Conn Vintage 1
Kanstul sig 1525
Bach Strad
B and S

I liked the Eclipse Red best but it's all very personal. I think it's important to try lots out and take someone with you who is a good player and knows your playing to listen to you.

Re: Flugelhorn Selection

A few months I decided to buy a new flugel. I had not played flugel for about 35 years but regularly play trumpets and cornet. I did a lot of research into where the smart money was particularly the differences between small bores (traditional) or some of the modern large bore instruments.
I wanted an instrument that would give an authentic sound; be well built; in tune with itself at the very least and be a professional model. Having seen and heard so many good reports about the Kanstul 1525 I decided to go for it and did something I have never before done. That is order an instrument without playing it first. I used the Washington Music Centre as they were offering the best price and had the horn shipped to Bahrain, where I live. When it arrived there was that normal feeling of some nervousness when one gets a new instrument. Questions like, "Will it be good as others say it is?", "Will it sound as I imagine?" etc. Well I needn't have worried because the instrument is exactly what I wanted. It's sound is excellent for the music I play and it will sit easily in jazz, concert or brass band. The craftsmanship is excellent, with great valves, good balance, nice finish and most importantly the instrument is in tune with itself. I could not be more happy with it.

Incidentally Lee Walkovich at MDC was absolutely excellent to deal with.

Happy hunting,

Paul

Re: Flugelhorn Selection

Another enthusiatically happy Kanstul 1525 owner. Only comlpaint is the somewhat clicky valves due to rotational play in the valve guides.

Re: Flugelhorn Selection

I have to second the Scodwell. I have gone from a cuesnon to a getzen eterna(in college) to a Yamaha 731st to the Scodwell. The Scodwell is very intune and has a secondary tuning slide at the bow. I have preset the position of this slide and then use the leadpipe to fine tune. The valves on the scodwell are great, the third valve trigger throws without any hang-ups and most importantly it is a joy to play. The horn allows you to think about the music and not how you are going to produce it.

Phew Hope that was'nt too long
