Re: Help Me Pick a Good C Trumpet

What exactly is "terrible" about the Selman, besides the bad valves?

PS. I don't think C-key is an actual term. It's just a word the the Selman people use.

Re: Help Me Pick a Good C Trumpet

a lot of people also use it in orchestras, especially in the US the default instrument for orchestral work is a c-trumpet (with exceptions for pieces that need a B-flat)

Re: Help Me Pick a Good C Trumpet

I owned a Blessing Pro C trumpet. It worked fine for church.

I knew a trombone player that used a C trumpet for Bflat parts. He learned different fingering and didn't know any better.

Re: Help Me Pick a Good C Trumpet

For $1500 I am sure you will find something decent. I recently played Stomvi, Kanstul, B&S C trumpets and could live with any of them. Make sure that you play before you pay. Do not buy an instrument that has serious intonation issues. There are enough decent axes out there. I have a 35 year old Bach C that had serious intonation issues until it got a tuning bell mod. I still don't play it very much anymore.

For what you are looking for, you may like the Eastman 530S C Trumpet. It's $1060 new. I hear these horns play very well for the money.

Tulsa Band Instruments, Inc. :: Brass :: Instruments :: Trumpet :: Andreas Eastman :: Eastman 530S C Trumpet with Free Mouthpiece Upgrade.

Re: Help Me Pick a Good C Trumpet

Most C trumpets on the market have a slightly larger bore than their Bb counterparts--.461 seems to be the standard compared to .459. Enough can't be said about trying out a trumpet for yourself. While the opinions may point you to options, only you can be the best judge of what you prefer.

Two mid priced horns are the Blessing and Jupiter (604) models. I had a Jupiter and didn't like the adjustable finger loop on the third valve slide. It also felt stuffy to me. I did like it more than the Blessing model. The Xeno is a super horn, as is the Bach Strad (in C). B&S also has an excellent C trumpet that is pretty much a copy of the Bach Strad. There is a B&S (made by J.M.Muzik too) rename called the Accent that is also a good horn. I tried a Xeno and the Accent and bought the Accent--the Xeno I played just didn't want to play in tune but the Accent did--same day, same tuner.

Take you time, try a bunch. When you try out a horn take music you plan to play with you and make sure you do a good warm up prior to playing. Play the same pieces with the same technique in the same time to try to eliminate variables. Often a person plays two or more horns in sequence and their result vary either because they are either better warmed up or more worn out when they get to the second (third, fourth, xxx,) horn.

Best wishes!

Re: Help Me Pick a Good C Trumpet

I've also heard good things about the Sonaré C - there's one at my local shop and I'd have tried it but my chops just got braces so...
but my teacher tried it and he said it was a good horn
