Last time I checked Mr. Schilke passed away in 1982.

I have a feeling he might be "lurking" on this trumpet master site but I doubt he is posting.

I will say that I am sure "oldmaz" knows more about what goes on with Schilke than anyone on this site :!:

For you...

There's no such thing as "the best."

Finally we agree, Schilke IS NOT "the best."

Just foolin' with you Schilke huggers. I love them, they're great horns that I'd recommend to many others.

Did I accidentally fall into a Zeus thread? Anyway it was mentioned earlier about work hours, average wages ect., and then marketing was mentioned. What marketing? :? Schilke may not have the best everything but they are one of the few manufacturers who put CUSTOM quality into everything they do! I have owned a Schilke and will own another one. No one makes better valves or has the rich tone for which Schilkes are known. Add that to the CUSTOM quality and you have a great horn. 8)

You want marketing, well, every twenty-years, whether they need it or not, Schilke comes out with a brand new black and white catalog with there standard models. (Oh wait, every Schilke is "custom" so they couldn't possibly have "models).

Their dealers make a "margin", so that's a marketing cost (avoid by Wild Thing, V-Raptor, Carvin Guitars, etc. by selling only factory direct.) There's even a guy lurking around here that bills himself as a marketing director.

Oh wait, they did put a lovely picture of a gold plated Eb horn in the ITG Journal. (That one actually made my mouth watered and almost qualified Schilke as a 21st Century marketer. There is hope.)

Anyway, there are "marketing costs" at Schilke. The horns don't quite sell themselves. You've got to at least get them in front a few potential customers, which they do fairly effectively, considering their production volumes.

BTW, I'm just trying to have a discussion here. As I've said several times, Schilkes are among my favorite horns. These marque-specific forums have their downside in that it's too easy to be perceived as a basher or anti-marque if you question the brand's "factoids". Oh well, that's part of what makes life interesting.

LOL

I spoke with them at TMEA. They are working on a new catalog for 2005. No, it is not the same black and white one that we keep seeing.

I do see a small poster on EBay from time to time... I am still kicking myself for not getting the one with the P5-4 with the white background.
