Re: How often do you oil your valves?

I oil mine every day. Sometimes they feel fine only to open them up and they are pretty dry and free of oil so I am glad I do it every day - they must need it.

I oil mine with ZAJA BLUE about 2 or 3 times a week.

I guess about every other week. Not because my valves feel sluggish or sticky... I just like renew the scent of my vanilla Zaja :)

Usually once or twice a week depending on how much I play that week. If I'm playing a lot maybe more.

Blue Juice is what I use; works for me!

Re: How often do you oil your valves?

Almost every day for me. Sometimes at the beginning of a session and sometimes during a break. Also, before performances of course, so that might mean two times a day in some cases for peace of mind. I also put a few drops down the lead pipe every other day to coat the insides.

I must admit Tom and Rowuk, you're right and with very good advice. They need to be swabbed out/wiped down and that is something I have not been good at doing consistently. Both of you have great ideas and I am going to implement them into my "routine" asap.

Those Eclipse valves are also fitted very tight and silky smooth. What kind of oil are you using, Alex?

UltraPure is fantastic, but since Leigh has had his own oil developed for these tight tolerance valves, I have been using Eclipse valve oil on my Eclipse instruments and it works great. Will Spencer has also developed a wonderful oil called "Snake Oil" and Zaja Blue is another good one. I have been using UltraPure on my non-Eclipse instruments and love the stuff.

Re: How often do you oil your valves?

I can't find anywhere on my Monette instructions where it says to swab out or wipe the valves.

I think way back I either read or was told by Monette not to wipe the valves.

Either way I never do wipe them off. I either wash the trumpet or just oil away.

That's my feeling too. I think wiping valves and casings can introduce more than it removes. If you're worried about particulate matter, wash out your horn in warm, weak, dish detergent water once in a while, swabbing as you go.
If your lubricant is thin enough, like Blue Juice, it will help wash out the valve assembly. I mix mine with a little odorless lamp oil so it lasts longer.
