Re: ID this Flugel

We seem to have a difference of opinion as to what mouthpiece taper will fit. Here's what Mouthpiece Express says:

Guide to Flugelhorn Tapers

Confused about tapers? We used to be, too! Here's the scoop on flugelhorn mouthpiece tapers. If you are using the wrong taper, you may be experiencing poor intonation and response!
  • LARGE Morse taper
Commonly known as Standard Taper, the LARGE Morse taper is used by Yamaha, Getzen, Callet, Benge/King/Conn, Holton and older Kanstul 1525 flugelhorns.
  • SMALL Morse taper
The so-called “Bach Taper.” Bach, Courtois, newer Couesnon, Kanstul 1525 and some European flugelhorns use SMALL Morse taper.
  • FRENCH (straight) taper
Also known as Couesnon Taper, French taper is used by original Couesnons, Flip Oakes "Wild Thing," Kanstul CCF 925, and original F. Besson flugelhorns.
Please note! Not all manufacturers make all three tapers, and some manufacturers treat certain tapers as special or custom orders.

I guess it's up to you to determine what you need. All I can say is that a stock Bach flugelhorn mouthpiece fit mine perfectly, but I traded it to a friend for the Callet, which didn't fit - hence, I had the shank turned down. I would assume that a Bach mouthpiece would have the "Bach" taper, and it fit mine. That's the basis of my answer to you.

Re: ID this Flugel

Hi Heck99,

Here is a pointer to the 1966 Olds catalog for the L-12 flug 1966 Olds Catalog

And make sure you check out the 1970 brochure 1970 Olds Brochure

The overall Olds Central site is worth investigating Olds Central: Information on trumpets and cornets by F. E Olds and Son 1928-1979

I have an L-12 flug and love it! I've replaced the leadpipe with a GR/Melk leadpipe and it really improved the sound GR / Melk Flugelhorn Leadpipes I use a standard GR Flug mouthpiece as well.

If you did get it refurbished you'd love the way it looks and plays!

Re: ID this Flugel

If I were to send it out to be refurbished, where should I send it? How much would it cost for the work on this horn? The horn itself is ok, but the finish is really hurting. I would guess this to be quite expensive.

Re: ID this Flugel

I suppose it depends on where you live. Mine was redone locally by Southeastern Musical Services, in Huntsville Alabama (great job, BTW). It was done 6 or 8 years ago, and cost around $225 if I remember correctly. I'd guess a regular overhaul (cleaning, minor dent repair, polishing, and a relacquer) would cost somewhere around $300 today. If you're not lucky enough to live near a good brass shop, I'd go with one of the big-name shops. Maybe some who've had experience with various ones can make a few recommendations.
