![]() | Welcome, CT. Surely someone knows of a shop down in Houston where you could go and try out a few horns. Doesn't Brook Mays have some shops down the area? Maybe you could let dcsteph know where you reside when you are not in school. We do informal things from time to time and many of us know other people scattered around the state. The great thing about Dave's trumpetfest is that some dealers supported it by bringing new horns. It just takes a lot of time and effort to coordinate and organize it. Dave did it all by himself and did a great job. This past summer, ITG was in Ft Worth and there were lots of new horns there. This coming summer, it is going to be in Denver. It is another way to get to see a lot of horns in one place. What time of year is TMEA in San Antonio? Aren't there trumpet vendors there too? Good luck. Mike |

| Mezzo Forte User | For starters, Sam Gibbs in Wichita Falls is doing the work on my baby (the Omega). Ok, about my neverending trumpetsearch (so it is beginning to seem)- I have ruled out the X series in Schilke horns, and have exchanged them for the S22 or S32 option in my search. Lemme explain the bore maybe a little better (I was hungry having just gotten out of class at my last reply, so kinda rushed it). Right now, I am having to use a Holton T602 (collegiate model, I believe that's the number), which has a .460 bore. Today it seemed like I couldn't fill the horn up for whatever reason. I dunno if that's got anything to do with hardly practicing over the winter break or not, and I really don't have that problem a lot, though I will say as the day went on I didn't have the problem as much. If it helps any, I think the Holton has to have one of the thinnest sounding upper registers I have ever played. The great news is that the Omega should be back by this weekend (at least that's what I've been told and I'm praying for!), so then I can listen to myself and remind myself what I don't like about the sound. I do remember that it is harder to play in the upper register than on the Holton (I'm probably not makin' a lick of sense here). I had looked at the Kanstul 1500 and it was one of the ones that was higher on my list, as was also the Schilke, a Strad, V-1, and because of everything I'm hearing about it's versatility, the WT. Gimme about a week or so before I can really say with more confidence what I want to change.

![]() | You could try a whole bag of V1s and Strads side by side at Brook Mays, LBJ. If you like, and I'm in town, I'd love to meet you there and help you, OR you can do it by yourself with Roger Holmes. Don't rule out Yamaha Xeno. Dave

| Mezzo Forte User | Well, I don't normally go that way when I go home, but I will probably go by there in this case on either March 12 or 13, depending on when I leave here (if I can talk my band director into it, I could leave early and be there around 3 or so on the 12). I would definitely NOT be buying then. I'm gonna try to earn the necessary cash this summer. Is the Brook Mays you're talkin about where I35 intersects LBJ or we talkin' different ones? If you think you could help me in the process, then by all means I will make every effort to meet with you, but don't think I will hate you if you don't.

![]() | It's on LBJ just East of the Toll Road, not far from your reference. Dave

| Mezzo Forte User | Okay, I know the one you're talkin' about. I always thought that they only handled Strads and some Yamahas, never saw that they had Zenos. BTW, checked out PIT Pops and DCJB. Very impressive. I was floored when I heard the Does Anyone Know what time it is, nobody seems to play that one much anymore. Lemme know when the next DCJB comes out, cuz you got a buyer right here!

| Pianissimo User | why wait... head out to tmea.org - they are having a convention in San Antonio Texas February 11th - 14th. Tons of vendors and music shops will be there with instruments and moutpieces.. I also found out today that Schilke will be there with probably the biggest assortment of horns that they have ever show up with and maybe brining a couple of new suprises... Chances are you will find the bachs, yammis, cons and such with no issue.. however I am unsure if any of the finer custom horns will have any reps there (lawler, eclipse, etc)... I am looking through the vendor list and it's a rough list to get through... also there is TBA later in the summer if you miss this one.. -marc |

| Mezzo Forte User | I had already given thought to going to the TMEA convention, however, I have a major college obligation that week. So that idea is gone, which sucks. As to the remark about why I got the Omega fixed. First, despite my sig, I am no longer in the marching band (long story on that one). Second, marching band is why that horn had to be repaired in the first place. The crap they do has people running into each other, literally. You could lose a tooth if you're not careful (I almost did). True, the horn itself isn't worth much. But you could definitely call me a sentimental moron, as I love that horn. It has done everything I asked of it, and has never let me down. I always knew that whatever the judges' were gonna say, it was my fault, not the horn's. I would't give that horn up if Gabriel himself came down and offered me his. But alas, as I have developed, I have found that there are some things it just can't do, thus my search. The great news, though, is that my horn will be back with me on Saturday. I guess you could say that is when the search really begins, as I will then have the horn that all others I try will be compared to.
