| Plating... I always thought how plating is put on effects how a horn plays and responds, at least that's what I was alway's told. If you say it's not that big a deal then I guess it isn't. I guess plating is purely cosmetic anyway. Some players say laquer does effect horn's though. Veldkamp, I was checking out your website. You sure have done extensive testing of different horns and different manufacturers, so I'm sure you know the real deal! Thanks again for your help and information. James |

![]() | Don't get me wrong, different finishes effects the sound of course. But my point is that whoever is silver plating the Calicchio trumpets is doing a great job. Silver plating --> clearer sound Gold plating --> when there's one layer it doesn't differ from raw brass Laquer finish --> because the layer is thicker the sound is warmer. scratch gold --> I didn't notice any difference with raw brass, it's more a cosmetic thing. scratch laquer --> a lot of difference, because there is a extra thick layer a vernish on the trumpet. nice for jazzhorns |

| Pianissimo User | Silver plating = brighter sound Gold plating = no difference (plating only 1 or 2 MICRONS thick) Lacquer = darker sound But we are talking minute differences. Some will say otherwise and of course this is all in the heresay. It is up to the player to decide for oneself. YOU sound like YOU no matter what! James, what model did you decide to order? Also, I think Calicchio uses a So. Cal. silver plater but I'll ask Dave Johnson about that. |

| Hi CDJazzTpt: Not quite sure yet. I was gonna PM message you soon for some extra advice, soon as I can I will man, I didn't forget. So far, it's a standard weight, (I think in Calicchio terms "classic" construction) a #3 bell and either a #2 or #7 pipe. Regular brass not red brass. Medium large bore. I tried a 1s2 and a 1s7, the 7 pipe although it is said to be a more slotting pipe still gave a very flexable and easy response over my intonation and note bending. It wasn't as notching as my Bach and this seemed to help with the notes especially the upper register of the horn. I could still bend and shape the sound and I really liked this. At least compared to my Bach horn. It seemed to be much more in tune and the response and sound were so much better. This was years ago when Chris and Irma were at a brass conference here in New York, with John at the helm now it looks like an even greater horn awaits!!! Very exciting indeed! I'm very stoked about John Duda and the work and integrity he has brought back to Calicchio. I always loved the Calicchio sound and soon very soon I hope to pull the trigger and talk to Dave and get one made. It's all a bit mind blowing, I want to really make sure it's right. I want a horn that I will use forever throughout my life and career, not just an experiment. I guess I'm a romantic and I'm basically saying I want to fall in love!!! HA HA HA! Anyway Cory, thanks so much for asking and for your info, talk to you soon. James |
