I thank all of you for your wise replies. But, unless I can play it first, buying a used horn is OUT. I've heard too many horror stories about Ebay!! As one poster mentioned, a new horn has some kind of warranty. And as for used horns in my area... The local music store has one used intermediate Yamaha. Good horn but no soul.

I'm leaning toward Jupiter's 1010S. Two tunable bells. One medium-weight Dizzy style upright, and a lightweight straight bell. Silver plate. $800. The two bells make this trumpet attractive to me! :)

Interesting note: WWandBW says their biggest selling cornet is Jupiter's shepherd's crook model, (their only model). $380. I assume experienced players are buying it to play traditional jazz.

warm regards, cornetmike

Hey CMike,

Don't dismiss the Blessing ML-1 series as the poster above did. I have a ML-1G, what a sound! I bought it from a gentleman who has 80+ (that's right!) trumpets. I tried everything in silver he had, early Conns, a Burbank Benge, Constellation, Callet Bb Symphonique, etc. After all that he pulled out the Blessing and I immediately fell in love with it! Since then I've played several other horns, including Flip's WT. This is the only horn I'd ever trade my Blessing for, which I hope happens sooner than later. PM me if you'd be interested in this horn, I'd sell it for $600.

Back to the topic...

The Jupiter Tribune is an EXCELLENT trumpet, comparable to the Bach 37, Kanstul 1500, Conn Vintage One, etc. I've played six or eight and all have had good intonation, great valves and all the tributes of a pro trumpet. I prefer the Reverse lead setup with the medium flare bell.

Jupiter has made excellent woodwinds for years. Apparently they decided to make a serious trumpet and they've succeeded. Your impression is right, it's an incredible bargain.

to clarify Dcsteps comments, I'm sure he was refering to the new Jupiter tribune xo 1600 series trumpets which I've heard nothing but good things about. The 1010 is the older pro horn that Jupiter makes.

As for the Blessing horns... I have played the ML1 and there copper bell flugel. The trumpet is not to bad really.... but the flugel is one of the best flugels I have played. The sound was nice and dark and the intonation was spot on.

I still think you can get a used trumpet for around the same price and it will be much better.

I second what the last guy/girl said. Used pro would be better than intermediate new...

I have a trumpet student whose horn really blows my mind. A bit of a tight blow to me, but I'm sure that is an individual thing. He can match tone and intonation with seemingly little effort, and he can really push AND control the upper register, with seemingly no problems from the horn. He got it for around $1000 new, and its a man of a trumpet. Made by Blessing, they are the new OLDS horns. Be sure you check those out.

(OH, and this means I now have heard and played on a Blessing horn I've liked! )

Also, for $100 more, the B&S Challenger II is a great bargain. This horn is big at MTSU, and is catching on at TN Tech and the area colleges here in Tennessee. Plays and looks a lot like a Bach. Pro horn for a little more than intermediate price.

HOWEVER!

I understand if you feel most comfortable with a certain horn's blow. One of my students plays on a Getzen Intermediate, and chose it over a multitude of other pro horns he tried. It was just the one for him.

In truth, the only thing that really separates an intermediate level horn from a professional level is the leadpipe. A Blackburn or Pilczuk leadpipe will effectively make your horn a "Professional" level one. Its amazing how much leadpipes can change and improve the way the trumpet plays. I plan on putting a Pilczuk on my 37 Strad, and a Blackburn on my Ambassador (A student level horn, supposedly).

BY THE WAY!

Discounting ebay just because of a few horror stories is absolute bunk. I guarantee you could find just as many horror stories about store-bought horns! I'm also certain you can find sellers with return policies. Anyways, you can get the best prices on ebay, guaranteed! They have Strads going for $600, Supers for $400, Ambassadors for $30, Getzens for $500... If you want to know if everything on the horn works before you bid, ASK THE SELLER! He wants to sell as much as you want to buy, so s/he's sure to answer.

ALSO!

Another normally overlooked method of buying trumpets is ANTIQUE STORES. I got an Ambassador for $30, chem cleaned and dent workd for $70, and now I have a horn that would compete with intermediates and most pros ANYDAY.

I think thats my two cents.
