Re: kanstul instruments

Kanstul valves, to me, require a little more upkeep compared to other horns for their breaking-in period. However, the valves become something AMAZING when broken. You can "shake" the horn up and down, and watch the valves work with gravity alone!

I owned a 1503 for a little over a year. Something I would like to comment about the signature line is I think Zig takes a lot of the Olds sound concepts in the bell: The 1503 sounds EXACTLY like a Mendez (to me).

One great thing to mention is that even if you wind up not "fitting" the horn exactly, the resale value is amazing.

I have heard nothing but great things about the 1525. Oh, and to hear a great player on the horn is something to enjoy.

Only problem I have heard is the copper bell is VERY fragile.

...I am strongly considering unloading my B&S and spending the extra to get a new 1525. If I do so, I also plan on calling pickmusic again. Miss King is an amazing dealer.

Re: kanstul instruments

I have nothing against Kanstuls. But I have to question you on your resale value comment.

I just sold two mint condition gold plated professional Kanstul trumpets for a friend and after all of the the advertising I could do on the various trumpet forums and email lists (along with both of these horns spending time on Ebay... one sold and one ended because of a scammer) the best I could get for these was $1300 a piece.

I didn't think that was so great. Especially considering they were gold plated. If you do a search of completed Kanstul listings on ebay I notice these horns just don't do very well.

Re: kanstul instruments

Well, I have unloaded two Kanstul instruments in the past: a 1503 and a ZeuS Guarnerius C. I lost only around $100 out of the 1503, and broke even on the C. Not bad considering I played both instruments one year a piece.

...I tend to think gold-plated instruments dont hold their value well anyway. My opinion from what I've seen, of course.

Re: kanstul instruments

Resale on Kantul is a funny thing. I find that they hold value better in certain parts of the country than in others simply because they are not well known in certain markets. If I was to sell my 1525 I would lose a lot in this market -- I would have little choice but to internet the horn, maybe even put it on ebay. That doesn't matter to me because that horn will not sell until I can't play anymore!

The sound was the complete opposite of what I was looking for; so, this is why I say, PLAY IT BEFORE YOU BUY IT.

Don't get hooked on the copper metal but rather look at the weight of the horn. The 1510 was probably the thinest and lightest horn I have ever held in my hands. It is my belief that if the maker uses the thinest metal that he can get his hands on be it copper or brass, the thiness of the metal is going to over ride the qualities of the metal itself; so, I got a very rich looking horn but with a very poor and thin sound.

I have said before in another thread, that this horn makes a good student horn.

Liad

what "sales hype"? they don't advertise and they hardly attend trumpet events (New York Brass, IAJE, to name a couple) One of my students owns a 1500 (the Bb version of the 1510 I believe) and it is a superb horn.

my experience with Kanstul is that they build a great horn and try to accomodate the customer as much as reasonably possible. I have had two or three Kanstul's over the last few years that were consistently very good!

one thing i would never accuse a Kanstul horn of having was a "very poor and thin sound"...maybe your mouthpiece setup?
