Elliot, are you sure it is the same horn I'm talking about? Did you buy it from a guy named Chip? Because it was a local trumpet professor who recommended it to me, and he said it was a very good horn.

Re: Modified Bach Strad

Actually Elliot, how could that be the same horn? The guy is selling it now, and he put the ad up just last week. Maybe you have a similar trumpet, but I don't see how this guy could be selling the horn you already bought from him.

haha! I dont mean the exact same trumpet, the same model. i obviously didn't by the exact same horn i thought i didnt have to be that specific, but sorry for being unclear.if you can get an older strad i'd go for an older strad over a new one anyday. one of my students brought in a bach 15 and it's the best horn i've ever played hands down. i will try that idea with the valve oil the only problem is i'm currently in Ghana teaching so theres no where to buy the online i'd have to order it online which will take a little while, thank you for the tip!

A different bach can play completely differently. A friend played mine then his back to back right after I got mine and mine was a lot brighter. Same model, less than 5 years apart.
Valve oil can also make a huge difference (there is a large thread on this somewhere), I switch back to Al Cass after using tech oil and my valves started moving sooo much faster

Re: Modified Bach Strad

I don't believe that oil can make a difference soundwise. The velocity of the valves is another story. As far as modifications of bach trumpets is concerned, the best shop in Europe for that would be Spada Music AG in Burgdorf, Switzerland. It seems to me though that the original poster is an american, so this maybe not very useful to him.

Re: Modified Bach Strad

Elliot, I'm sorry for the mixup. Yes, I know now it couldn't be the same horn, I was just in a kind of serious mode. I knew I was about to buy my first good horn, and I was scared for something to happen to it. When I read what you posted, I freaked out and thought you didn't like the horn that he is selling me, and I thought you sent it back to him. I just want everything to go as planned, and I was a little extra hyped up about it when I made those reply posts. Again, sorry for that, and sorry about your disappointment with your horn.

Elliot,
I don't know what you are talking about. If a horn is properly cleaned, it stays that way for a while. The effect of the valve oil does not spread quickly to the rest of the horn. If your horn is silver and you live in an area with a lot of sulphur in the water, the horn will tarnish VERY quickly. If the horn is brass and the laquer is gone, it will also oxidize. That is not a "defect". What part looks like small lips? What is it made out of?

I wash my horn in the sink with dishwashing liquid (with lemon scent). I then run the snake brush through it, rinse it out, let it dry, grease the slides, oil the valves and play test it. It ALWAYS is in the case when I am not making music.

I don't see how you have been screwed? The previous owners "dirt" has long been washed off/out.

Re: Modified Bach Strad

I think he means he was screwed because he was all the way out in Ghana and couldn't have the possibility of sending back the horn. As for the dirtiness, I just don't know.

Re: Modified Bach Strad

UPDATE!

I actually did get to buy this horn, and it is the best horn I have ever played! I am so happy with the decision. It is a Bach Strad model 37, and it is a little dirty, but no dents or dings! I can't wait to play it right now even though I'm in class!

Re: Modified Bach Strad

My Bach Strad is a great all around horn, after many many years. One thing I have done is remove the nut on the third valve slide, and replaced it with a plastic/nylon wire nut. Helped by eliminating metal on metal noise, since nut had tendency to vibrate and not stick. Like the funky look of the wire nut, too, and it works without a peep of noise. Doens't adjust stop length on the screw, but then my ear is supposed to do that, eh?--HH
