![]() ![]() | Re: New member here. Bach Strad. Help me be fair. On a somewhat similar vein, I was given a new Olds Recording Model cornet by Raphael Mendez, many years ago while I was a scholarship student at The National Music Summer Camp at Interlochen, Mi., where Mr. Medndez was a guest instructor for a couple of short periods during the two 2 week sessions that I spent there. I gave up my music due to job pressures and when my old age and rapidly encroaching physical debility set in I gave the little horn to Esteban Carillo, music director and principal trumpet with The Mariachi Cobre. Steve had mentioned during a concert with our local symphony, that his inspiration musically was Raphael, causing Steve to enroll at The University of Arizona, where the Raphael Mendez Museum is housed. On Mothers Day, three years ago, after their last performance of the season with our symphony, I gave the Olds to Steve. Just last Thursday I attended another of their concerts with our symphony and during the intermission went back stage to say hello to Steve. When he saw me walking toward him, he ran to give me a great bearhug and asked if I could pick him up at his hotel to go out for a cervesa or two. I did. We went. We had fun talking about his use of the horn and that he had just finished another recording that included two tracks using that cornet. When he discovered that I am back into playing my horns he offered to send the Olds back to me. I refused. I am thrilled that a trumpeter of the caliber that Steve has attained is actively using one of my old and prized instruments. If you are convinced that the youngster will continue with the trumpet and that you can financially afford to make a gift of it to him, you stand to experience a joy in giving, much as I have.
