Re: New trumpet in NY?

Thanks, I have contacted Felix and am now thinking even more seriously about a stage 1 trumpet. His suggestion was the vintage or the NY 7 model, what are your opinions about these ones? I am more interested in the characteristics that makes them good, rather than that they are good trumpets -I do not doubt that!

One of my problems as a trumpeter is that I am a not very big woman and sometimes have a problem making the sound carry through the orchestra. So I want a trumpet that is easy to blow, especially in the high register, that is, I want a lot of sound for little work. Also I play rather softly (not silent, only soft), so I do not need a trumpet with a very warm, soft sound however nice that is -combine that with my way of playing and it gets too much, I´ll sound as if I play a cornet or even a flugelhorn rather than a trumpet...I compensate this with a mouthpiece that gives me a bit sharper tone, but I still do not want a trumpet that makes this any worse.

Re: New trumpet in NY?

I have had a good deal of play time with the models Felix suggested. Taking into consideration the qualities you desire, I think these are good choices...BUT NO ONE CAN FULLY DETERMINE THIS BUT YOU, WHEN YOU ACTUALLY TRY THEM!!

(did I say that forcefully enough? haha). From merely "personal" experience, I would say that I might rank the Vintage slightly over the NY 7 in terms of volume (again, this is subjective to the player), but both really have an easy playability to them. That said, if taking into consideration what you say about your mouthpiece, it is possible that you "may" find a better balance with the NY 7. Again, this is subjective. There's a notion on the NYTC site about these horns having "fluid intonation". I take this to mean that they play fluidly across the registers...play wonderfully in tune...then one thing begets the other. It is so fluid because in plays so well in tune...because it plays so well in tune, it is a very fluid, even blow across registers...see my point? The further by-product is that you don't end up having to work as hard..so...

This, from a long time Bach guy....imagine a great Bach Strad...without the inherent pitchy notes and/or fight (some term that stuffy) as you ascend....there you have either one of these horns.

I do hope you take my "personal" experiences as just that. MINE. I suspect you will have the same experience...just by nature, but this will only be determined through "your" trials. I do wish you the best of success in your fun search. You have made a terrific start. I will be happy to talk further, if you'd like. I'd definitely be interested in things as you go along. Please post back or even contact me through private message.

Best of success.....

Re: New trumpet in NY?

Well, my problem here is that I will not have the opportunity to try these models myself in advance, (and not the individual trumpet I will buy at all untilI´ve bought it). So I´ll have to take a chance, whatever I buy, and that is why I am writing here -I know fairly well what I want in a trumpet but I am not familiar with all available brands and models of even the larger brands, so I´d like as much information and as many opinions as possible.

Well you are certainly going to a place where you will get plenty of opinions. Good luck in whatever you find. :)

Krydolf: Felix's Stage 1 horns are custom made to your preference. Of course, Felix sells a whole bunch of non-custom horns from different manufacturers. Just email him! :)

Krydolf, I understand where you're coming from. I live in Beijing so even trying a horn is out of the question for me. I don't really know where to purchase a cheap, high quality horn. For this reason I've been doing a lot of research.

Ideally, my future horn is going to be under $2000, but before that I did look at the Stage 1 Vintage as a potential horn. From what I've heard, it has the characteristics as a Bach Strad, only of far better intonation, slotting, quality, and everything else. Basically, if you enjoy the sound of a high quality Bach Strad then the Stage 1 Vintage would probably be right for you.

Re: New trumpet in NY?

For the record, I find my Stage 1 ouplays my Bach Strad by a fairly large margin. But that's just my opinion. :)

Re: New trumpet in NY?

I'm also thinking about buying a Stage 1 Vintage from Felix now too. I've chatted with him about it, and he delivers worldwide.
