| Pianissimo User | Old Elkhart Bach #303 Please help! Hi, My current horn is an elkhart bach aniversery addition with a serial no 303. It does have a number on the mouthpeice reciver and its a reverse leadpipe. its a model 37. it has engraving on the bell. I bought it used about 4-5 years ago for 1600 and have been playing it for everything since. I usually didnt use it for marching band in high school but now im a freshman in college and have been using it in marching band. I just now noticed that the serial no was so low. One of my fellow trumpet players thinks that it has a mt. vernon leadpipe seing as how many elkhart bachs have mixed parts due to the fact that they had some parts already made before the factory was moved. He and others said that this horn would probly be worth some money. The finish is deteriarating. There are some small holes of deteriation on the tuning slide where it slides over the leadpipe. Also on the first and second valve casing the silver plating has worn down to the brass in small spots where my thumb rests and the metal is starting to deteriarate where my pinky wraps around the 3rd valve casing below the 3rd valve slide. I dont know if I should hold on to this horn or sell it. It was sugested that I should have it striped to raw brass wether I keep it or sell it but I dont want to throw away the original finish. This horn plays great and is a great lead horn. If i do keep it should I strip it down . I dont know what to do. If you actually read this... THANK YOU. |

| Pianissimo User | I love those early elkhart horns! Someone suggested that I strip the one that I had, but I never did that because I liked it so much just the way it was. If I were you, I'd hang on to the horn. If you are concerned about the wear on the brass, I used to use clear nail polish on the spots that were worn through. That was a quick fix. A better fix would be to have the horn touched up and eventually gold plated. Sounds like you have a pretty sweet horn. Later, |

![]() | I think you'll find that your Bach Anniversary edition would have been relatively new when you bought it. It's not an older Elkhardt. If I remember rightly, they were numbered outside the normal Bach numbering sequence. Regards, Trevor |

![]() | That's correct. The anniversary edition Bachs are numbered differently. I don't believe there was any such thing as a reverse leadpipe on New York or Mt. Vernon Bachs, either. An old Bach with that number would be a very early New York Strad from the 1920's, quite rare.

| Pianissimo User | Ya, thats what I figured because it was in pretty nice condition when I bought it. My friend got really hyped up about my horn and I dont know anything about horns so I figured id ask around. Also, Im looking for a new horn and was wondering if anyone had any sugestions of a good horn that would work well coming from fairly open bach. Thanks for all your replies! P.S. Mr . Proctor. I am from Huntsville also, I went to grissom and am at alabama now. |
