If it is played by the same person (preferably a pro)- yes...but played by a beginner my spada may sound as El Cheapo...(Vincenz spada wil kill me if he sees that post...)

Re: Pocket Trumpets

There is a big difference between cheapo pockets and expensive ones just like with their big brothers! I bought a real cheapo that I used for practice while driving. I used to clock a lot of driving time for my regular job. I saw it as a great opportunity to double task. When I put it in front of a tuner I discovered that this horn was in A. Otherwise, it played fine. big sound in all registars, and fun to play!

Re: Pocket Trumpets

Sorry, SB it seems that I did not get the idea of blind test. Probably you mean a blind test done by myself. Of course I could tell the difference..So would you. I was just teasing you. Making a difference between to different El cheapo horns or 2 boutique horns may be more difficult. Sorry for the off topic.

Re: Pocket Trumpets

I was looking for an answer which I figured had been asked before on here but didn't find it in a search. On pocket trumpets, will a practice mute( I have a Best Brass mute that has a mini-plug input for connecting an iPod, etc) fit in the bells of these? I was looking for a small trpt to take on vacation that would take up the minimum amount of room so I could play in the condo and not disturb anyone.

Re: Pocket Trumpets

You guys have no idea! The big difference is in your head! Pocket trumpets rule!

My $200 chinese pocket trumpet works just fine. I used it once in a quintet rehearsal though. My chops only lasted about an hour. If I am just playing alone, it is fine. When using it in an ensemble you really feel the difference. No projection, no "fatness", no fun.

I think I will just use it for the reason that I bought it for: to have a trumpet that will go where no trumpet has gone before. It is there to practice in hotel rooms and on vacation.

Re: Pocket Trumpets

I, also tried the jean baptiste in sam ash. I found it had a little too much resistance and they come unoiiled and the valves just stuck. I bought a Selman, that has monel valves. I'm very happy with it. It sounds good. I'm sure some ppl have problems holding it, but, I have small hands and it's fine for me. Jean baptise and better pockets are good, cecilios are horrible and a waste of money. The valves are crap. Good luck and enjoy.

I was actually rather surprised by how small it is. It's approximately 1/3 of my actual Horn. It came with a nice case just like all JB instruments do, and it can be carried anywhere. You could literally put it in your school book bag and use it during your band period.

Okay, so when I opened it, it was looking very good! It came with a Standard 7C mouthpiece, White Gloves, and of course the Horn itself. Now so I tried testing it out, and I must say I am very pleased.

The quality of sound is actually fatter then the one of my bigger horn. I can still go from all my registers on it starting from low F# to the G over high C. I actually feel like I can hear the note in my head more clearer now. Of course the mouthpiece in there was kind of different from my regular 7C I have now, so I didn't like it that much...But that's minor. Valve reactions were fine, no problems there. If you actually know what to do, you could put the trumpet in tune very easily there are 2 slides.

Oh, one little thing I didn't like was the way it had to be held. After about 30 minutes of playing I noticed a white mark of my hand, and it wasn't receiving enough circulating blood. The Pocket Trumpet doesn't have much flexibility space, so that's the only problem I see with it. Overall, great horn to have.

So you guys have any pocket trumpets? Any experiences? Thoughts?

Re: Pocket Trumpets

Just went to Sam Ash and tried out a Jean Baptiste pocket trumpet...thought it played really bad but found out that my electronic mute fit perfectly in it, so I'll likely try a Selman on Ebay next as the co. on there has a 7 day return policy.

Re: Pocket Trumpets

I bought a Maxtone pocket trumpet on ebay for $105 (that's the price with shipping), and couldn't be happier. I have a nice little portable horn that has decent tone/tune, and sits on my desk in my office. I can practice, do long tones, mess around in my free time at work. Worth it? Totally. At home, I have a Taylor XLite and a circa 1970's Couesnon flugel. Do I want to drag those around for basic practice? Naw. If ya got the bucks, it's totally worth it.

Mark: Did you try any other pocket trumpets before buying the Maxtone?

Has anyone compared the Selman to the Jean Baptiste?

No, I was just looking for an inexpensive pocket trumpet to practice in the office. The guy who was selling it sounded like a legit musician and the price was right, so I bought it.

I have to fight the temptation to buy all those different color cheapo pockets on ebay...who wouldn't want bright green, purple, and blue midget trumpets on display in their house? LOL
