Re: Pocket Trumpets

I bought a Cecilio pocket trumpet from KKMusicStore on eBay. Worst idea in my life. It was great for the first 30 minutes. Next time I'll save up to get a more expensive one with a name I've heard of, like Jupiter's pocket trumpet which I can buy from my local music store.

Re: Pocket Trumpets

Well,I actually just got a Phaeton Pocket Trumpet for myself to practice in a car.
I have to say that it is a pretty good horn.A bit on a pricey side, but better then any other pocket trumpets I've tried, even the big names.
I do get a lot of laughs and finger pointing while I drive, but hey.....that's my only chance to practice, and I don't have to let the steering wheel go:)

Re: Pocket Trumpets

How does the Phaeton play compared to the others you've tried? Do you get enough projection to use on a gig or is it mostly a practice horn?
Oh, and how much do they cost? I'm in the market but want something with projection and some tone color.
Thanks,
Brian

You want projection - buy a full sized trumpet - or you get to work really hard.

Re: Pocket Trumpets

I just got an Amati before the price jumped more than double to $700! I took a chance and am glad I did because this thing plays in tune and has a much bigger sound than either the Jupiter or Winston I once had, which both had intonation problems. I got it at Allman music and wanted it in lacquer but they said they had a black and red one at the old price of $319 so I went for the black. If you like red, you better jump on this or be prepared for sticker shock.

Re: Pocket Trumpets

I'm interested to hear more accounts of people's experiences with the dodgy cheap Ebay pocket horns!

Yay or nay? (I think I know what the general concensus will be already!)

Re: Pocket Trumpets

put brass washers inside the bottom valve caps on valve one and three.

Several times I have seen this improve the tone and response of the cheaper instruments including a pocket trumpet.

If you dont have suitable washers try coins although they will seal the bottom of the valve.

Re: Pocket Trumpets

A pocket trumpet is a normal Bb trumpet, folded down into a more portable size. If you were to stretch out a normal trumpet and a pocket trumpet, they would be about the same length. To achieve this, the tubing is more tightly wound. This gives the instrument greater portability, novelty, and they also usually cost less than a normal trumpet.
