ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

I'll wake up now, a little groggy before.

OK now I get it. One of mine is silver plated. No lacquer. The other 2 have lacquer valve bodies. They had lacquered silver bells.

oldlou has a spectacular aura aboutoldlou has a spectacular aura about
Silver horns

The primary reason that the bell on your silver belled horn was lacquered in the production process is that it is difficult to lacquer everything save the bell. If the bell had been left off while the balance of the horn was being sprayed, how could the bell assembly with it's struts be soldered to the rest of the horn without scorching and probably removing the lacquer from the contact spots on the sprayed portion?

It has only been in the very recent past that I have seen lacquer coated silver horns. Traditionally they were left as naked silver, but with the advent of some of the modern chemical finishes, which are somewhat scratch resistant, it has been possible to coat silver horns, which saves the owners a GREAT deal of labor, keeping their instrument looking nice. This is a very good sales pitch feature. Another reason for coating the horns in production is a warantee issue. The coating can hide a multitude of imperfections in the final buffing of the horn, and, using even mildly abrasive silver polishes removes a bit of silver at each cleaning. Most of the wipe on rinse off thin liquid silver cleaners will agressively attack any brass that the chemical comes into contact with, making these cleaners VERY dangerous to use on a high quality instrument.

Ok, so the dealer is getting my horn back, and is taking the laquer off the bell only. The rest of the horn is laquer yes. All of it is free to me, as should be expected.
So I guess it turned out well.
Again, thanks for the help, and I am glad it ended in a way that made me happy lol...
Peace,
Julian
