![]() | Yeah, expensive. However, you ain't puttin a lot on the horn. Silver, 7 bucks or so an ounce - 28 microns needed Gold, 480 or so an ounce, 3-4 microns needed Rhodium, 2500 bucks and a whopping .3 microns. Yes, 3 tenths. So, although expensive when bought by the ounce, it is in the same price neighbrhood as gold to plate. As far as the XLR, that refers to the bell not the bore.

| Fortissimo User | Let me just whip this out! (pulling tape measure out of desk drawer).... and measuring up a trumpet. (darn hair keeps getting in the way) I calculate approximately 211 square inches of surface area on a standards Bb trumpet INCLUDING the inside of the bell down to where it joins onto the bell tube (about 2.5" from the bell rim). If the gold is layered on at 4 micron (four millionths of a meter) then there is roughly 0.033 cubic inches or 0.54 cubic centimeters of gold. At a density of 19.3 gram per cc that works out to 0.36 ounces. With a selling price of $460/ounce you are looking at $160 worth of raw gold not including silver undercoat, many hours of cleaning/plating, "infrastructure" (plating tank, ventillation equipment, solutions, etc.) You can work the numbers out for yourself if you wish... treat the first 2.5" of bell as a "frustrum of a cone". Is anyone really "making a killing" at gold plating? Not likely! |

![]() | http://www.artisanplating.com/articles/rhodiumcare.html This is a really good article on rhodium. Most of the issues I can see surface when rhodium is plated over silver. (not the case on my horn) Rhodium 'flakes' when a thicker plate is applied... I think up to 2 microns can be applied - I guess that would be relatively thick in rhodium terms. My horn has a whopping .3 microns. Other issues surface with the plater being careless when applying the rhodium - and this plater is an absolute pro.

![]() | NICE, Gary! Too bad Leigh stoped using "Big Brown"/UPS... for sure, it would have made a stop in Phoenix! Gary, we had the pics of you in the helicopter with your Eclipse and your rifle. With that in mind, given the properties of the Banshee, and everything I've experienced via mp3's, and the stories from Jarrett about you, it would be prudent if we all shared a moment of silence for the poor trombone players that will soon be "tested"? Leigh, you did have Gary sign a release on this latest modification, didn't you? SHINE ON! Bruce

![]() | Gary - have you got the rhodium beast yet? I was hoping to get up to Luton to see it before Leigh sent it over, but I think I may have failed. Let's just hope he has got another waiting - I am looking forward to trying one of those. |

| Mezzo Piano User | The horn is gorgeous looking. Now if I can just get Gary to come up to work while he is out-processing so I can play it for about an hour. I am curious to see how it plays compared to the first rimless bell I played of Leigh's.
