David, you might be thinking of the 'S' series Schilkes. Of the Schilkes that I have played, none of them have been anything like a Bach. Especially not my Schilke B6.

I find my Schilke to be much more lively than any Bach I have ever played. Here is what I can say is better about my Schilke:

intonation
eveness of blow
response
focus
upper register
Lighter, faster valves

In virtually every way, I feel that my Schilke is a superior horn than any Bach that I have owned. I am more accurate, I have better endurance and I feel that it has a better sound.

There are MANY who prefer Bachs to Schilkes, but I don't think I'll ever go back.

If you are looking for a nice blowing, brilliant sounding trumpet, here are the Schilke models I would look at:

B1 - Designated ML (460?) w/Large yellow brass bell
B5 - Designated ML (460?) w/Medium (copper) bell
B6 - Designated M (450) step bore w/Medium copper bell (same bell as B5)
B7 - Designated ML (450 - same as B6) w/Large yellow brass bell
X3 - Not sure about the specs on this one, although I do believe that it has the Large yellow brass bell

I could be wrong, but I also believe that all of the Schilke B series horns are step bore at some point or other. Also, something to note about Schilke bells, I believe they are all 5" at the bead - the M, ML or L when referring to a Schilke bell refers to the flare and taper, and not the outer diameter.

I agree schilke are alot better than bach and are all hand made. they are the better choice than the calicchio tpt. I've played both .

I had the great opportunity to go the Tulsa Calicchio shop in Oct 04. John Duda and his staff welcomed me with open arms and let me try a bunch of different models they had in stock. I ended up getting a REAL SOLID 1s2. Duda seems to be committed to excellence and getting back to making really good Calicchio horns. Kudos to Duda and his staff!!!!

Chris, is Brian Grasmick still in Omaha?

I hear great things about the new Calicchio's.

Chris,
Thanks for the info. What mp are you using with the Calicchio? Did you try several mp's? Thanks.

I'm using a Bob Reeves with a Bach 3C rim, ES cup, and 69 backbore. She barks!

Some more perspective...John Duda is awesome. Bought a Kanstul 1503 from him years ago while he was at Tulsa Band. At the time he sent me a number of horns to test including a R37 Calicchio that he had personally "fine tuned."...aka doing the hand lapping that should have been done by Chris at the factory. The R37 was a GREAT all-around horn with a fantastic rich sound. The only reason I didn't buy it was that I it really sapped my endurance especially in group playing. So…I went for the Kanstul…which was a great horn too…then ended up with a super 14x,xxx series Bach and sold the Kanstul. Just added an Eclipse MR to the line-up…wow what fun....but I'll still hang on to my Bach. Anyway (at the risk of being somewhat controversial)…I also own a Schilke P 5-4 and previously owned an S32. The P5-4 is fantastic...perfecto. The S32 was an extremely well-built horn that I wanted to love. BUT…like other Schilke horns (in fact to a lesser degree than the B series) the sound sounded sterile…lacking fullness and depth of other horns. That’s where Bach’s have a BIG advantage…as does the Eclipse. So…make sure you listen to recordings of yourself playing in large halls (or wherever you play) in addition to having others listen to you in the environment where you perform. Depending on the type of music you play most…IMHO you won’t find Schilke to be the best all-around option from an audience perspective. Again…fantastic horns…but don’t look for a fat sound.

I have had access to several R37's and a few Studio 2's for the last 5 years. I have played both quite a bit(more than 6 months). The sound of the horns was quite bright in comparison to my Eclipse MHY but it was a good solid sound. The only problem I ever had with any of the Calicchio models were the valves. Even freshly cleaned and oiled they were still a bit sluggish after 10 or 15 minutes.

The Schilke models I have played were great horns, with great valves and solid projection. The only negative was that I had to work harder on these horns to play in the lower register but that could have just been me.

Get to a music store and play as many models of both horns as you can. In the end it will be what fits you best.........and that may be any number of trumpets.
