The old Yamaha flugels had a valve guite that could be splayed out for a better fit. It would be nice if everyone made horns that lack that "wobble" in the valves!

Amen!

In addition, an extra third slide for piccolos that would make third valve the equivalent of 23. On the A picc, 123 would give us low D (concert) and 1234 low A. Perfect for the bass solo in WO I and lots of Handel stuff. Also for picc., a fourth valve with the possibility of being a low 1st valve or the standard fourth. Great for the second part in Vivaldi, or for tacking on those high d's at the end of pieces.

Fun thread, Robin--thanks!

No doubt Richard, but i mean how the player hears the horn as they're playing it. Read somewhere that a beadless bell creates better surround sound? -so to speak. ') Like being in an acoustic environment i guess?

Hi.

I'm with whoever posted #9.

Just to add my 10 cents worth. When us makers do stuff along these lines to genuinely try and help the player and make their life easier, we get poo-pooed by all the 'experts' out there for braking with tradition. Sour grapes? To a point, yes.

Think I'll go look at posting #9 again.

I have thought about this for a long time because I'm not supposed to use a trumpet stand with my trumpet but, they did say that I could hang it.

The stand would have something to go in the bell just to steady the trumpet but it would have a rod that went up to the neck and the trumpet would actually hang.

I hope you can picture it.

Re: Trumpet Design - our fantasies

I think most of these ideas have already been done:

Quote:
I would like to see a tuning bell horn with REAL braces where they are positioned on fixed bell horns. (I even know how I would build such an animal if anybody was interested).
I saw a Blackburn conversion C tunable bell with the bell that slides on the valves section, fixed braces on the bell that attach to a sliding brace on the leadpipe.

I would like to see an Amato water key that lets ALL of the moisture out
Saturn waterkeys?

Quote:

Sonare trumpets have this feature, they call it Microlok or something

Quote:
I would like to see a mouthpiece receiver with adjustable gap (I even know how I would build such an animal if anybody was interested).
NYTC Stage 1 New York models have this feature optional

Quote:
How about a trumpet that has the intonation of a Schilke or Yamaha and the sound of a Bach.
The new Yamaha Artist models have this feature.

The Pitch Finder allows you to adjust pitch of the entire instrument.

There are some smart guys working on horns!

Agreed.

Have you ever tried putting together a C trumpet that had the full length Bb leadpipe and tuning slide and taking the extra out of the tail of the bell?

I have a theory that it would play much better than a 'normal' C trumpet but don't quite have the materials or skills to successfully build one.
(This may require one to 'swap' the left and right positions of the bell and the leadpipe to allow removal of the main tuning slide - imagine X rather than ||.)

Re: Trumpet Design - our fantasies

Andy if you can build me one just like that- i'll give ya a Million Dollars for that Sgt. Pepper Horn!

What would you say about this idea here? A brace that'd be a spindel that would lock itself between the pipes and bell? It'd have real small rubber tips on either end- say a quarter the size of a pencil eraser. I guess that'd be enough area to offer good resonance placement, and i'm guessing as well, that it would be almost no resistance at all to the bell's vibration. Particularly if using a thin-weight bell?

The player could move'em about as desired making for something of a tuning bell? Or not use'em at all at given times? Not sure what no braces does for sound quality-

Thanks.. Chris

Hey Trent:

You missed that innovation......Conn did it about 60 years ago. They had some copper bell model which they advertised as "The horn that guarantees that you will never crack a note".
