| Forte User | Hmmm, the horn has been "chemically bathed" about a week ago, so the valves and inside of the horn is pristine, and I guess there's no need to worry about the Never Dull and the vinegar. I'm worried about the OUTSIDE now, because as everyone here knows, one of the main reasons to get a silver horn is the "shininess" factor, and the strad has kind of lost it's zip in that department. Its clean, with a tarnish mark on the 3rd slide about the size of the tip of my pinkey finger. The mark on the leadpipe ring is actually a part where the plating is gone, and it's all on the inside of the ring (not noticeable). The valves are what really get my concern, it's as if the silver has blackened. Polishing cloths don't work, and the chem bath didn't do jack (It removed a lot of tarnish elsewhere). So I'm kind of wondering what the hell to do! I did find a bottle of Tarn-X in my basement (had to be assisted by Sherpas), and I have seen a bottle of this at Blackburn's workshop (The silver I saw there was GORGEOUS), but the directions on the back leave me a bit leery too. "Wear household gloves... Don't soak for longer than two minutes." Geh, I'm not one who likes following DA MAN'S "rules" and "safety precautions!" However, if it can save me a trip to a jeweler (I thought it was called anti-wicking), thats great!

It's not horrible stuff unless you rub your eyes, etc. DA MAN doesn't want to get sued for your irresponsibility. Makes sense. Jim

| Forte User | UPDATE: Called Wilburn's Jewelers, spoke with them about the horn. They said that the liquid they used for silver would remove the finish on silver plate. Didn't call Carthage Jewelers, I don't like them. So.... I will be doing some Tarn-X-ing tonight. Will have to find a place to use it in (I don't think the bath tub is a wise choice), but I will keep everybody posted on the results...

![]() | For the love of god this is a trumpet... Not a ring. Use a Bach Polishing rag. Yamaha has them as well. Put some silver polish on the thing if you want to clean it up real well. Quote:

| Forte User | to: Me (heavens2kadonka@hotmail.com) from: PCKing (pcking@pickmusic.net) HI Van I just saw your post on the Bach silver. here's my take. When you are using tarinish remover or treated cloths, it will seem to keep producing black stuff. There is a point when you should just stop with the treated cloth and buff it. Easy - but thoroughly. I like a soft cotton cloth for this - like old cotton t-shirt.. preferablly one that hasn't been washed with fabric softener. The black stuff will come off and it should bring out the shine. PC [/quote]

| Forte User | I mentioned the jewler thing because: 1: There are jewelers here that also do instrument "renewal" or whatever they call it as well as engraving. I was checking to see if it was cheaper. and 2: I was wanting to know what the hell wicking is! The people didn't know, so someone's going to have to explain it to me....

![]() | Wal-Mart To get any crap off at all (including the crap by water keys), I use the silver polish cream that you can get at Wally World (Wal-Mart) for a couple bucks. Works wonders for shining the horn too (much better than a polish cloth just not as convenient). |

![]() | I played church today with a woman who was on vacation for a few weeks. She said her distant cousin's wife said, "ya know john hasn't played for over twenty years, would you like his old trumpet?" Sure. She opened opened it up and it was a BACH STRAD. Now she has TWO! Probably needs some cleaning too. |
