I get it. With the prices of even new intermediate horns I can't imagine that it wouldn't be worth investing a couple hundred dollars in a good old reliable that still looks good. I didn't think the 16B Victor was considered a student model; I thought it was one of Conn's better models?

No substitute for a valve job, but a good idea to do it anyways. Yamaha has a rebate right now, so get it while it lasts. I'm in the process of changing all my horns to one of the three types of this new oil, over from the classic Blue Juice.
I put this oil on one of my horns that has worn valves, and it played 100% better. Definitely check this out!
Cheers

Thanks for the heads up on the Yamaha oil. I've been looking for something to use on my unrestored 1889 besson Cornet. I took it in to have a valve looked at and the moron repairman over-buffed the valves and slides so it doesn't have the compression it once had. Have to keep it well oiled and greased. I've been trying to gunk them up ever since.

Thanks. I subjected the horn to the test and the third valve is definitely the worst of the three. I think I may send it out someday. I ordered two bottles of that yamaha synthetic vintage oil from my local music store. I definitely appreciated that tip. What do the rest of you think. Should I consider replacing it?

Re: Valve Rebuild Needed?

A few comments. I use Hetman Valve Oil. It comes in 3 grades. Light, regular and classic (for old horns). I am very happy with it for all applications.

If you like the 6B and the rest of the horn is in nice shape and it gets played a bunch, then a valve job is definitely a good and worthwhile option.

Just about every repair tech sends the horn off to Anderson's for valve replate and refit. Some then do precision valve alignment when the horn is returned and then send it back to you. In the past, I have been able to deal direct with Anderson when I have not wanted or need the alignment done. They do charge a different rate when they are dealing with the individual owner than when they are dealing with a repair tech or facility.

I'm right on the edge of having my '46 Committee done... It plays great, but I know the velves leak a bit and wonder how much I'd gain by having them done... but it plays great, and I don't like messing with it.

Re: Valve Rebuild Needed?

Thanks for your comments LiveJazz. I'm a comeback player and now I am playing quite a bit since I joined a local large ensemble. If I continue as expected I will likely want to get it back to it's original playing condition. I was kind of seeking affirmation of my thinking that the silver plated Conn 6B is worth the investment. I guess it really does come down to personal preference doesn't it? I would welcome other opinions though.

The 6B was a prolevel horn when manufactured. It ws played by more than a couple of modern jazz greats. It' a screamer when pushed and is well built and well thought of. I think they bring $400-650 plus depending on condition. But it really depends on how much you like it for whatever reason. Acomplete valve job will run $400 plus if I remember correctly. Perhaps you could call a tech or Andersons and get confirmation. Good luck.

Re: Valve Rebuild Needed?

Even after playing for a couple of hours, it seems the vintage synthetic valve oil does help minimize the worn valve effects. Thanks Brass Crusader!
