Re: WCU Trumpet Festival

Just wanted to let everyone know that registration will close on thursday january 31st. After that people will be able to register at the event only.
A minor tune up is also giving a trumpet fest special. Ultrasonic cleaning for $75. He will take the horns overnight and bring it back on sunday. Great deal.

Re: WCU Trumpet Festival

Had a nice rehearsal yesterday with the "Last Mambo King" Orchestra. Great charts, tremendous percussionist and a 4 man trumpet section lead by a Fania All-Stars legend.....I think everyone is going to enjoy this performance on Sunday.

Re: WCU Trumpet Festival

This is a brief recap of my experience (also brief) the first day of the WCU Trumpet Festival.

First...I'd like to say what a terrific job JC, Felix and "everyone" there did. The student presence was fabulous. JC's students did everything from help unload horns to hosting information tables, assisting visitors...to some fabulous playing in concerts. This was a first class event all the way around. Super thanks to JC and West Chester University. You all deserve a huge congratulations.

I was only there on Sat from about 8:15am until around 2pm. I'll explain that later...let's get to some pics/info first.

My apologies for some rather poor pictures. I had a disposable camera that just didn't work out all that well. Regardless.. let's show a few:

First, a shot of the NYTC table of beauties. It was terrific to meet and help many folks of all ages there and talk about these wonderful horns of Felix's. Here's a couple shots:

Dylan Schwab (left) and Felix Vayser (right)

...side note here... Dylan...a great pleasure to finally meet you. I am so sorry we did not have more time. I know you were eager to take advantage of the many clinics, etc that were available. Look forward to your tour through Charlotte in March. We'll get together some then.

Here's a shot of JC, Antoine Acquisto (and another fantastic player, who's name escapes me at the moment..my sincere apologies) taking a well deserved bow after some exciting playing. Not only is JC a gracious host, but a really fine player. Great to get the opportunity to hear this!!! BTW>..the WCU Wind Ensemble was absolutely terrific. Preparing for this event took some great effort on their part..and they were wonderful. Thanks to all of them.

I took this quick shot of Jerry Callet. I had introduced myself to him, talked about my association with some of his former students, etc. Later, I was in the Exhibitor lunch room and Jerry came in...some others that were there left, so it was just he and I there. He asked me to sit down with him...so we had a very nice little chat over some lunch. A real treat to sit and talk over trumpet, old times...he is an encyclopedia of trumpet history.

I also got to witness (and I do mean, "witness") the wonder that is Allen Vizzutti on Sat. Effortless...purity of tone...expression...ridiculous tonguing, technique, phrasing, range control... A true wonder. On Sunday, they had another concert that featured Russ Johnson, Tony Kadleck, Allen Vizzutti and Felix Vayser (yes!!! Felix on stage baby!!). This was apparently something else, gang. I am totally sorry I missed that...but here's a couple of pics:

If you look real hard at that last shot, you may see Felix still quivering as he is standing next to none other than Allen Vizzutti. hahahaha... This is a tall order for ANYONE... but Felix handled it great. He said Allen was very nice and everything went totally great! Awesome. Way to go, guys.

So...why was "I" up that way? Just a quick couple of shots. I was lucky to have a few gigs up that way that coincided with the WCU event...it fit right in (though, I wish that I could have also been at the fest the entire time...still). Ray Alexander contracts a horn section for the Four Tops and Temptations and he and I were fortunate enough to be with them at Carnegie Hall on Fri night:

Here's our trumpet section - left to right is Me, Dan Yeager and Ray.

There are 10 horns altogether. (3 tpts, 2 bones, 5 saxes).

Here's a couple shots of some pics on the dressing room walls there at Carnegie. What a historical - pictorial!!

(pics are, from the left...Louis Armstrong...then on the right of that, Charlie Parker/Dizzy Gillespie...wow).

(by the way...that last pic shows Count Basie, Kenton, Joe Williams...etc.. the ticket price for the concert was $2.75. wowowowow. )

Anyway... had a great time. An amazing venue..great crowd... Went the next day to the festival...left at 2 to head down to Trenton NJ to play at the Patriots Theatre at War Memorial. Another beautiful facility. Great weekend. Tons of fun.

Let me also say what a treat to meet JC...Tony Domenico (a very funny and enjoyable guy. Great to see you there!), Tony Kadleck (what a thrill. A very friendly and humble cat. It was a real treat), Russ Johnson... another terrific fellow. Great to meet such tremendous players who are also nice human beings (and you thought trumpet players and nice humans were an oxymoron!!). I may have been the only moron there, for not taking more pictures with these guys. haha. Next time...

....and Felix? You are a class act, my friend. Thanks for the tour of the area late Fri night...zzzzzz... and the bagel stop (my wife and kids devoured them first thing when I got home!hahaha).... and all you did this weekend.
